GLENVILLE, W.Va. –
Malik Grove threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to
BJ Baldwin as time expired at Morris Stadium on Saturday afternoon, putting the Falcons over the top in a 34-28 victory over the Glenville State Pioneers.
The victory for Notre Dame (4-1, 3-1 MEC) was their fifth straight on the road, tying a program record, while the loss for Glenville State (3-2, 3-2 MEC) was their first in three tries at home, and first in program history against the Falcons.
On a day where
Mitchell Shegos broke the single game school record for receiving yards (266), it was Grove's touchdown pass to the birthday boy Baldwin that was the difference in a come from behind victory, where the Falcons rallied from a 14-point (28-14) third quarter deficit to steal the victory.
Notre Dame's defense forced a three-and-out on Glenville State's opening possession. They then took the ball deep inside GSC territory, taking the ball inside the Glenville State two-yard line, before the Pioneers punched the ball out of
DJ Greene's hands, and fell on the fumble to keep NDC off the board.
The Pioneers missed a 32-yard field goal at the end of that drive, but they eventually fired the first shot, as Dante Roberts threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Dante Absher, who made a terrific one-handed catch in the back of the end zone to give GSC a 7-0 lead with 13:09 left in the second quarter.
However, the Falcons used a pair of big plays to take the lead, using two long scoring strikes from Grove to Shegos. After the NDC defense forced another three-and-out, Grove tossed a 74-yard touchdown pass to Shegos to tie the game at 7-7 with 5:44 to play in the first half.
On Glenville State's next drive,
Vincent Ellis and
Derrick Brumfield combined for a huge sack on third down, forcing the Pioneers to punt again. On NDC's first play from scrimmage on the ensuing drive, Grove threw a 73-yard touchdown pass to Shegos to give NDC a 14-7 lead at the 3:06-mark in the second quarter.
Glenville State used a long scoring strike as well at the end of the half, as Roberts fond Austin Ratliff on a 65-yard touchdown pass with 17 seconds remaining in the opening half to tie the game at 14-14.
Grove completed 11-of-14 passes for 203 yards in the first half, and Shegos was the primary beneficiary, catching seven of those passes for 192 yards.
The Pioneers forced Notre Dame to punt on their first possession of the second half, before they regained the lead as Roberts found Absher on a 19-yard touchdown pass to complete a 14-play, 87-yard drive to give the Pioneers a 21-14 advantage.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Pioneers forced an
Emmanuel Smith fumble, and they fell on the loose ball at the NDC 21-yard line. Roberts found David Thomas on a 21-yard touchdown pass on the very next play to give the Pioneers a 28-14 lead with 7:13 left in the third quarter.
Notre Dame was forced to punt on their next drive, but Glenville State's Giles Guy-Williams muffed the punt on the return, and the Falcons recovered the fumble at their own 45-yard line. Three plays later, on third-and-10, Grove tossed a 55-yard touchdown pass to Shegos to bring NDC within seven (28-21) with 5:36 left in the third quarter.
After forcing the Pioneer offense to go three-and-out on their next drive, Notre Dame put a 10-play, 78-yard drive together, where they ran the ball nine times, and Green punched it in from one yard out on the only rushing touchdown of the day for either side, tying the game at 28-28 with 14:53 left in the contest.
With 3:27 remaining, Glenville State began a drive at their own 16-yard line, and marched all the way to NDC 28-yard line, but their drive stalled, and on third-and-eight, Roberts was called for intentional grounding at the NDC 48, forcing them to punt.
Notre Dame's final drive began at their own 20-yard line with 1:08 to play. After a five-yard pass to
Marvelle Ross and a 10-yard toss to Shegos, Grove scrambled for 15 yards to the 50-yard line, before scrambling for six more to get to the GSC 44. With six seconds on the clock at the time of the game's final snap, Grove escaped the pressure, and fired a Hail Mary to the front of the end zone, and Baldwin made a terrific diving catch to end the game.
Grove led the Falcons with 100 yards on the ground, and he completed 20-of-31 passes for 351 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. Grove has now thrown 17 touchdown passes this season, and just one interception.
Greene had NDC's lone rushing touchdown and tallied 79 yards on the ground. Shegos caught 11 passes for a program record, 266 yards, and three touchdowns, giving him eight touchdown receptions on the season. Smith caught three passes for 12 yards while Baldwin hauled in two passes for 52 yards and the big touchdown at the end.
The Falcons were led defensively by
Aykee Henderson, who had a team high, 10 tackles, including one for a loss.
Xavier Dowdell added nine tackles and one for a loss as well.
The Falcons return to action on Saturday, Oct. 8, when they return home to take on West Virginia State at Mueller Field on homecoming. Kickoff is set for Noon.
