Box Score GLENVILLE, W.Va. -- In another tightly contested battle, the Notre Dame Falcons fell in the final minute of the contest on the road to Glenville State, 41-38.
For the Falcons (5-3, 5-2 MEC) the loss snapped a five-game road winning streak, while the victory for Glenville State (4-4, 4-4 MEC) was their third in a row at home.
Wide receiver
Mitchell Shegos set a program record in the contest, with 23 receptions, and tallied 160 yards, giving him five straight 100-yard receiving games.
Ray Russ set a program record as well with 49 completions on the day, as he threw for over 400 yards for the third week in a row.
Things started very well for the Falcons, as they forced a three-and-out on Glenville State's opening offensive series. The NDC offense followed suit, as they scored on their first play from scrimmage, with Russ tossing a 41-yard touchdown pass to
C.J. Germany to give Notre Dame a 7-0 advantage less than three minutes into the contest.
However, Glenville State responded quickly, as they not only scored on their next drive, but they put up points on their next four drives. Two plays after Notre Dame took the lead, Sean Steele threw a 62-yard touchdown pass to Dante Absher to tie the game at 7-7.
Notre Dame marched inside Glenville State territory on their next drive, but Russ's pass was picked off by Jeff Kidder in the end zone. Eight plays later, the Pioneers settled for three, on a 25-yard field goal from Tanner Wright to give the Pioneers a 10-7 advantage with 6:29 left in the first quarter.
The Falcons then went 66 yards on nine plays to regain the lead, on an amazing diving catch by
Emmanuel Smith in the corner of the end zone, a 10-yard touchdown grab to give NDC a 14-10 advantage with 2:57 left in the first.
Glenville State responded again, as they marched 75 yards on six plays, and Rahman Lee ran it in from 11 yards out to give the Pioneers their second lead of the game, 17-14, with 35 seconds left in the first quarter.
After forcing a Notre Dame three and out, the Pioneers began their longest drive of the half, as they completed a 13-play 92-yard drive on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Steele to Absher.
The Falcons and Pioneers exchanged field goals in the final minute of the half, as
Kyle Kaplan hit from 31-yards out with 46 seconds left, and Wright split the uprights on a 28-yard attempt as time expired in the half to give Glenville State a 27-17 lead.
The Falcons had a difficult time keeping drives alive on third down in the opening half, converting just one of five third down opportunities, but that all changed in the second half, where they tallied 13 third down conversions.
That theme started on their opening drive of the second half, where the Falcons picked up a trio of third down conversions on their way to a 13-play, 70 yard scoring drive which resulted in a six-yard touchdown pass from Russ to tight end
Ray J. Brown to bring the Falcons back within three (27-24).
Notre Dame forced a three-and-out from Glenville State on their next drive, and took the lead moments later, as Russ and Smith connected on a 26-yard touchdown pass to give the Falcons the lead, 31-27, with 6:56 left in the third quarter.
After forcing another three-and-out from the Pioneers, the Falcons committed another turnover, as the Pioneers fell on a punt during a punt return. Four plays later, with GSC running back Tevin Drake inside the Notre Dame five-yard line, the Falcons forced a fumble, which was recovered by
Zach Chatlain.
However, the momentum pendulum swung again just a few moments later, as Gary Henderson tipped a pass from Russ, and then picked it off, and returned it 52-yards for a touchdown to give the Pioneers a 34-31 lead with 2:11 to play in the third quarter.
The Falcons took over, and Russ engineered another 13-play drive, this one lasted 65 yards, and on third and goal, Russ connected with
Kyle Perkins on a five-yard touchdown pass to give NDC the lead, 38-34 with 13:02 to play.
It didn't take the Pioneers long to respond, as Rahman Lee scored three plays later on a 26-yard touchdown rush, which would prove to be the game winner.
Notre Dame had several chances to tie or take the lead down the stretch but couldn't cash in. Kaplan missed a 35-yard field goal with 8:41 to play which would have tied it. With 2:52 left, Zack Mayes picked off Russ at the GSC eight-yard line, and in the final minute of the game, with the Falcons driving, NDC failed to convert on fourth and six at the GSC 29 yard line to end the game.
The Falcons ran 100 plays on the day, for 564 yards of total offense, getting 438 of those yards through the air. Russ tied his own program record with five touchdown passes, marking the second week in a row that he's accomplished that feat. He threw for 438 yards on a 49-for-67 effort through the air and was intercepted three times.
In addition to Shegos's big day, Smith also had a huge day through the air, hauling in 13 passes for 112 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
George Berry led the charge for the Falcons defensively, coming away with 10.5 tackles, including one for a loss.
