Men’s soccer looks to break conference tie with WV Wesleyan, hosts Concord this weekend

This Week: Notre Dame College men's soccer will be in Buckhannon, W.Va., on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. matchup with West Virginia Wesleyan College. On Sunday, Notre Dame comes back home to play Concord University, at 3 p.m.

Records: NDC currently has a record of 6-1-1 (3-1-1 MEC), garnering 10 points on the year. West Virginia Wesleyan also has 10 points, with a conference mark of 3-1-1 and an overall record of 5-2-1. Concord enters the week with a record of 1-2-3 (0-2-3 MEC).

Coaches Corner: Carl Nolan is in his eighth season as head coach of the Notre Dame program and 19th as a member of the coaching staff. He has an overall coaching record of 85-33-12, while going 68-21-8 against MEC competition. Josh Spencer is now in his second season as head coach at WVWC, with a record of 12-10-5 (8-8-5 MEC). Alex Smith is in his first season at the helm of the Concord program.

Rankings: None of these teams are ranked in the United Soccer Coaches (USC) NCAA Division II top 25. Notre Dame is No. 5 in the USC's Atlantic Region Poll.

Series History: The Falcons hold a record of 14-3-3 all-time against W.Va. Wesleyan, a series that began in 2013. NDC has won four of the last five matchups, with the only other result being a draw. In those five meetings, NDC has four shutouts. Notre Dame has had a lot of success against Concord, dating back to 2013, as the Falcons hold a record of 18-0-1. The Falcons are on an 11-game win streak against Concord. Since the beginning of the 2017 season, NDC has allowed three goals to the Mountain Lions.

Noting the Falcons: Following a loss to Charleston, on Sept. 17, NDC got right back on track last week. The Falcons took down Wheeling, 8-0, and then downed Salem, 5-0. Mirai Sato was named Mountain East Conference Offensive Player of the Week after scoring two goals in each game. Juan Pineda was named MEC co-Defensive Player of the Week after playing all but 18 minutes over the two games on the defensive side. He also scored two goals against Wheeling.

Prior to last week, NDC had totaled 10 goals all season and had not scored more than three in a game. Over the past two matches, Notre Dame has totaled 13 goals. The Falcons are averaging 2.88 goals per game, while their opponents are sitting at an average of 0.38 goals. NDC now leads the conference in both of those categories, along with being at top of the MEC in assists, with 18.

Ailton Fagner Silva (12) and Mirai Sato (10) are one and two, respectively, in shots on goal in the conference. Sato leads the conference with seven goals scored, three game-winners and 14 points. He ranks sixth in Division II in goals and 13th in total points. Notre Dame's goalkeeper Danilo Abayo Wilson leads the MEC in goal against average (.385) and ranks second in save percentage (.870). Wilson leads the country with five shutouts.

Noting the Bobcats: West Virginia Wesleyan has had a rollercoaster of a season, less than a month in. On Sept. 10, the Bobcats came back to defeat Charleston, 2-1, for the first time since 2017. However, in the past two weeks, WVWC has played to a scoreless draw against Concord and then lost to Davis & Elkins, 2-0. Last week, W.Va. Wesleyan shutout Salem, 3-0, before losing to D&E.

WVWC's goalkeeper Bryant Sheffield leads the conference, and is 13th in the country, with a save percentage of .880. Sheffield is second in the conference in goals against average, at .477. Last week, in a shutout of Salem, Casey Bunker, Sam Newell and Emre Sinasi Deniz all scored as WVWC outshot the Tigers, 20-8. Sheffield hauled in five saves. Deniz leads the team, and ranks second in the MEC, in both goals (5) and points (11).

Noting the Mountain Lions: Concord scored just one goal last week, losing to Charleston (2-1) and Frostburg State (1-0). Fabian Amhof had the only goal of the week for Concord, against Charleston. In the game against UC, Concord was outshot 19-6. Concord remained close against Frostburg, taking 10 shots to FSU's 12, before losing by a goal.
