Football takes first road trip of 2023 to meet Glenville State

This Week: Notre Dame College football will take the field in Glenville, W.Va., on Sept. 16, as the Falcons will be visiting Glenville State University for the first time since 2021. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.

Records: Notre Dame is 2-0 (1-0 MEC) after a record breaking 87-9 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan, last Saturday. The Falcons' broke the program and Mountain East Conference record with 87 points, the second most points scored in an NCAA Division II game this season. Glenville State is 1-0 with a 44-9 road win against Northwood University in week one and bye week last Saturday.

Coaches Corner: Garrett Mack enters his second season at the helm of the NDC football program. He has a record of 11-3 (10-1 MEC). Mike Kellar is now in his fifth season at the helm at Glenville State. He holds a mark of 18-19, overall, while going 15-19 in the MEC.

Rankings: NDC is receiving 30 votes in the week one American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II poll, moving up to 28th.

Series History: Glenville State has one of the best records against Notre Dame out of any team in the conference. The all-time season series has gone back-and-forth several times, with NDC winning five of the nine meetings. GSU won every year from 2013-15. Although the Falcons have come out victorious in five of the last six matchups, the Pioneers were the last team to win on Mueller Field, back on Nov. 9, 2019. Aside from the 2013 matchup (GSU - 20-16) and the 2019 game (GSU - 23-20), the winner of this matchup has scored at least 27 points.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame had multiple records fall in its win over West Virginia Wesleyan. On top of breaking the program and conference record in scoring, the Falcons had six rushing touchdowns in the first half and finished the game with nine rushing touchdowns, which is two shy of the single-game Division II football record. The Falcons set the program and conference record in total touchdowns (12) and rushing touchdowns. In NDC history, the 383 rush yards ranks 6th and the 643 total yards ranks 4th and the 774 all-purpose yards is third highest. NDC's three interceptions ranks tied for 5th in program history. Cameron Shirkey broke the NDC and the MEC record with 12 extra points made in a game and he is second in Notre Dame history with 15 points scored by kicking.

Opponents are converting on third downs at just 7.7-percent so far against the NDC defense, which leads the country. The Falcons are also first in NCAA Division II in blocked punts (3), 10th in takeaways (6), 10th in red-zone defense (50-percent conversion) and 11th in interceptions (4). On the offensive side, NDC is fourth in points per game, with 55, and 11th in rushing offense, with 236.5 yards per game. Cameron Shirkey ranks 11th in scoring per game (13) and total points (26). Dominic Buttazzoni is sixth in D2 with an average of 45.1 punt yards per game.

Noting the Pioneers: Glenville State made a statement in their opening non-conference matchup against Northwood University. The Pioneers were leading 27-2 at halftime, with 13 first quarter points and 14 second quarter points. In the fourth quarter, GSU added 17 more, in a 44-9 victory. Quarterback Anthony Garrett went 19-33, for 231 yards passing for two touchdowns and ran in for a third. Orion Bonner caught eight passes for 93 yards and Terrell Heath Jr. tallied 60 receiving yards and a touchdown. Northwood used two quarterbacks and the Pioneers still picked the ball off four times. However, Glenville State had a bye week last weekend and have not played since August 31.
