The Falcons jump into MEC Tournament play

This Week: Notre Dame College men's soccer will host a Mountain East Conference Semifinal game for the first time since 2019. On Nov. 8, the Falcons will battle Davis & Elkins College with a scheduled start time is 2 p.m.

MEC Tournament: In the quarterfinal round, the three seed Davis & Elkins and six seed West Liberty played to a scoreless draw. D&E advanced past the Hilltoppers in penalty kicks, 5-4. The four seed Concord and five seed West Virginia Wesleyan also went into overtime. Near the end of the second overtime period, Concord scored to advance with a 3-2 victory.

On Nov. 8, Davis & Elkins will travel to visit the two seed Notre Dame College for a matchup at 2 p.m. The other quarterfinal match will pair Concord against the one seed Charleston, at 7:30 p.m.

The Mountain East Conference Championship game will take place on Sunday, Nov. 12, featuring the winners of each Semifinal matchup. The game time will be determined later.

Records: NDC currently has a record of 11-2-4, while going 8-2-4 against the rest of the MEC. Davis & Elkins is 8-6-4, and ended the regular season with a 7-5-2 MEC record.

Coaches Corner: Carl Nolan is in his eighth season as head coach of the Notre Dame program and 19th as a member of the coaching staff. He has an overall coaching record of 90-34-15, while going 73-22-11 against MEC competition. Meir Lewin is in his first season as head coach of the Senators.

Rankings: Neither team is receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches (USC) NCAA Division II top 25 poll. In the latest NCAA Division II Regional Rankings, NDC is No. 5 in Super Region 1. The top 10 teams in the region earn a bid into the national tournament.

Series History: NDC went 1-0-1 against D&E this year and the Falcons are now 7-2-3 all-time against the Senators. On Sept. 6, the Falcons drew with the Senators, 0-0, in Elkins, W.Va. But at home, on Oct. 8, the Falcons took care of business, winning 3-1. The Falcons and Senators first met in 2013 and NDC won the first four matchups. Since the beginning of the spring 2021 season, it has been much more competitive with the Falcons going 3-2-3 over the last eight meetings. Last season, in the MEC Semifinals, the Falcons put together an incredible comeback to tie the match at two, with both goals scored in the final six minutes of regulation. NDC advanced to the MEC Championship game in penalty kicks.

Noting the Falcons: This season, Notre Dame had the fewest losses in a regular season since 2013 and the most ties in a season in program history. The Falcons did not play last week, after its final regular season game with Salem was canceled due to weather. Because they earned a bye in the quarterfinal round of the tournament, the Falcons have not played since Oct. 29. NDC has gone 6-1-1 on Mueller Field and 5-1-3 on the road this year.

In the Falcons win at home against D&E, Ailton Fagner Silva scored in the 39th minute, Evans Armah found the back of the net in the 42nd and then Silva scored a second time, in the 87th, just five minutes after the Senators had put their first goal on the board. Parker Bolin, Armah and Jared Rimmer all had an assist for the Falcons. D&E's goal was scored by Shemar Daley.

As a team, Notre Dame is currently second in the Mountain East Conference with 41 goals and an average of 2.41 goals per game. The Falcons are also second in the conference in assists, with 34, and points, with 116. Ailton Silva is second in the conference with 43 shots taken. Evans Armah leads the conference with seven assists, while Silva and Jared Rimmer are tied for sixth with five assists, each. Mirai Sato is tied for third in the MEC with nine goals and ranks tied for second with three game-winners and tied for third with 19 points. Danilo Abayo Wilson ranks second in the conference with seven shutouts and is fourth with a 1.01 goals against average.

In the national rankings, the Falcons are 16th in the country with a goal differential of plus-24 and 20th in scoring offense with 2.41 goals per game. Wilson ranks 15th in D2 with seven shutouts.

Noting the Senators: Davis & Elkins broke program records last year with 16 total wins, 14 conference wins and then defeated Mercy, 3-0, in the MEC Tournament. This season, the Senators got off to an 0-2-1 start, before picking up the pace to reach eight wins and seven conference victories. D&E has been a better road team this season, going 5-4 away from Elkins, while 3-2-4 at home.

In the semifinal contest with West Liberty, Davis & Elkins outshot WLU, 27-8, but played to scoreless draw. The Senators advanced in penalty kicks, going five-for-five. Shemar Daley took 12 shots and seven shots on target throughout the game. Grant Wyles saved five shots for D&E, while Noah Underwood made 13 stops for WLU.

The Senators rank sixth in the conference with 23 goals scored and rank fifth in both assists (18) and points (64). Shemar Daley leads the league with 53 shots and 27 shots on goal. Modou Faye is tied for second in the conference six assists. Johan Magana and Daley are tied at the top of the team with six goals, each. Grant Wyles is tied with NDC's Wilson with seven shutouts on the year, which is tied for second in the conference. Wyles is also second in goals against average (.863) and save percentage (.841).
