Football will battle Charleston as Notre Dame College celebrates Homecoming

This Week: Notre Dame College football hosts the University of Charleston on Oct. 1, at noon. The game will represent NDC's Homecoming.

Records: Notre Dame played its most complete game of the season, on the road against West Virginia State, last Saturday. The Falcons put up a season-high in points and defeated the Yellow Jackets, 48-13. NDC enters the week with a overall record of 3-1 and a 3-0 mark in MEC play. Charleston bounced back after a tough home loss to Frostburg State with a home victory against Alderson Broaddus, last week, by a score of 62-7. The Golden Eagles have a record of 2-2 (2-1 MEC).

Coaches Corner: Garrett Mack enters his first season as head coach of the Falcons. He had been on the staff the past two seasons. Quinn Sanders is also in his first season at head coach, but spent the past two seasons as the Offensive Coordinator at UC.

Rankings: In the latest polls, Notre Dame sits at No. 18 in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II top 25 and No. 22 in the D2Football.com top 25. Notre Dame has been ranked in a national poll every week since Sept. 24, 2018. This is the 37th consecutive week inside the AFCA and D2Football top 25.

Series History: The all-time series between NDC and UC has featured some close, competitive games. Charleston won the first three matchups, from 2013-15, before Notre Dame won five straight games. That streak ended last year when Charleston beat the Falcons, 38-28. Only three of the nine matchups have had a score differential of over 12 points.

Noting the Falcons: Everything was working for the Falcons last Saturday, as they scored a season-high in points (48) and total yards (471) and a low in points allowed (13). Chris Brimm had his longest passing touchdown of the season, getting the ball to Andre Allen Jr. for an 80-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Once again, the Falcons made a big special teams play, as the WV State punter fumbled a snap in the endzone and the Falcons recovered for a TD. The Falcons' defense also had multiple interceptions (2) for the second consecutive game. Tyshawn Lighty had a career-high 99 receiving yards. Wendell McClain had the fumble recovery and an interception, while Nate Moore recorded 14 tackles, and now has double-digit tackles in every game this season.

The NDC defense leads NCAA Division II with three defensive touchdowns and ranks 15th in passes intercepted with six. NDC is also 12th in turnover margin at plus-1.5 per game. Individually, Cameron Shirkey has taken six field goals, which ranks 9th in D2. He has made them all. Nate Moore is ninth in total tackles per game (11), tied for eighth with 44 tackles, 10th in solo tackles per game (6.5) and tied for seventh with 26 solo tackles.

The Falcons are now 14-for-16 in the redzone, this season, after going 6-for-6 last week against WVSU.

Among active career leaders in Division II, Chris Brimm is second in games played, yards per pass, total offense, touchdowns responsible for, touchdown passes and passing yards. He is third in total plays and passing completions, fourth in pass attempts, eighth in offensive yards per play and ninth in completion percentage. Nathan Moore is currently fifth in Division II with 301 total tackles, sixth in solo tackles (162) and 8th in assisted tackles (139). Jack Kosko is currently 14th in DII with 36 tackles for loss. Tavon Hooks ranks seventh with 32 career passes defended.

Noting the Golden Eagles: Last week, Charleston took out some frustration against Alderson Broaddus, on Homecoming. After losing to Frostburg State, 34-28, on Sept. 17, Charleston scored 62 points and accumulated 467 total yards against AB. The Golden Eagles defense held AB to 1-for-14 on third downs, negative-22 rush yards and had four sacks. UC has had an up and down season so far, losing to Gannon and Frostburg State, and barely sneaking past Fairmont State, by two points in quadruple overtime. The Golden Eagles scored just 13 points against Gannon in week one, but since then, they have scored at least 28 points each week.
