NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. -- Last weekend, the Notre Dame College women's rugby team went 5-0 to win the Battle For the Border 7s.
"We faced a wide variety of weather conditions, from hail, to rain, to 40 m.p.h. winds," said head coach
Jack Nece. "The women overcame the adversity of the weather to still put up a significant point differential, particularly for 7s."
Women's rugby won their matches, 24-10 over Binghampton, 50-0 versus Fredonia, 42-0 over Buffalo, 26-5 over St. Bonaventure and 36-5 in the Finals against Colgate. The women showed great teamwork and varying playing styles to lead them to success. Scoring efforts were led by senior captain
Aviana Matteo, junior
Aubrey Boing, junior
Raina Perciak and sophomore Abbie Dickerson. Great support play was shown by freshmen Charlee McCormack and Jordan Kouns.
"As a coach, I couldn't be happier with the progression they have shown as players and as teammates," Nece mentioned. "A certain chemistry is beginning to develop, which is leading to more efficient play and success on the pitch"
The team used the event to prepare for the Allegheny Rugby Union Division I 7s Tournament, held at NDC on April 30th. Looking to capture their first league 7s title, the women will continue to work hard and prepare for what looks to be a deep playoff run this spring.
