This Week: Notre Dame College football ends the 2022 regular season with a trip to Philippi, W.Va. to play Alderson Broaddus University, on Nov. 12. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Records: Notre Dame enters the final week of the regular season with an 8-2 record (8-1 MEC). The Falcons locked up a share of their fifth consecutive Mountain East Conference trophy with last week's win over UNC Pembroke. Concord is just one game behind in the standings, but with a Notre Dame win this weekend, the Falcons will be standing alone at the top of the mountain. NDC has now won at least eight games in each of the last seven seasons. Alderson Broaddus looks for its first win of 2022, currently sitting at 0-10 (0-9 MEC).
Coaches Corner: Garrett Mack is in his first season as the head coach of the NDC football program. He had been on the staff for two seasons, prior to 2022. Travis Everhart is in his third season with Alderson Broaddus. He has a record of 1-24, while going 1-22 in Mountain East Conference play.
Rankings: Notre Dame is receiving votes in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II top 25. The latest NCAA Division II regional rankings had Notre Dame is sixth in Super Region One. The top seven teams in each region earns a bid to the D2 national tournament.
NCAA Division II Tournament: The NCAA will release the official bracket for the national tournament, on Sunday, Nov. 13. The Selection Show can be seen on NCAA.com, at 5:30 p.m.
Series History: Notre Dame and Alderson Broaddus have played twice, after AB joined the league prior to the spring 2021 season. The Falcons have dominated the series, outscoring the Battlers 141-17. Last season, on Senior Day, NDC cliched a share of the MEC trophy on Mueller Field and set a program and conference scoring record in a 72-7 victory.
Noting the Falcons:Â Notre Dame was steady last week against UNC Pembroke, both offensively and defensively. On their second drive of the game, the offense went 67 yards down the field, and the result was a 14-yard touchdown from
Chris Brimm to
Jeremy Hamilton. NDC would get six points before halftime as
Cameron Shirkey was successful with two field goals on back-to-back drives. The Falcons led 13-0 at halftime. Early in the third quarter,
Cael Bright intercepted a pass and set the offense up at the Pembroke 15-yard line. After a short run, Brimm found Hamilton for 12 yards. The NDC defense intercepted three passes on the day and sacked quarterback Josh Jones six times.
Chris Brimm threw for 147 yards and three touchdowns.
Idris Lawrence ran for 104 yards, the fourth time he's ran for over 100 yards this season.
Teddy Tiokeng finished the game with 13 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks, along with four QB hurries. Bright,
Wendell McClain and
Antoine Holloway II each had an interception.
Cameron Shirkey won MEC Special Teams Player of the Week after he went 2-for-2 on field goals and made all three extra points.
The NDC defense is first in NCAA Division II this season with six defensive touchdowns and ranks 7th in passes intercepted with 15. NDC is also first in blocked punts, with five, 5th in opponent passing efficiency, at 90.4, 15th in total takeaways, with 22, and 18th on defense, by allowing just 16.3 points per game. Nate Moore is sixth in D2 with 61 solo tackles and also ranks seventh with 105 total tackles.
Antoine Holloway II is tied for ninth in Division II with 14 passes defended.
Cameron Shirkey is tied for third with 15 field goals made and is 6th in the country with a field goal percentage of 88.2-percent.
Nathan Moore is the all-time leader in tackles at NDC with 361. He has also become the leader in career solo tackles with 198 and assisted tackles, with 163. Last week he broke the program's season solo tackle record and now has 61.
Earlier this season,
Chris Brimm took over the NDC record for total career touchdowns with 119 (106 passing, 13 rushing) and most career offensive yards responsible for (11,890). As the starting quarterback since 2018, he has played in 55 games, winning 48 of them. In recent Division II history, Minnesota Duluth's Chase Vogler has owned the most victories in a career, since 2012, with 46. At the Division I level, Kellen Moore had 50 at Boise State. Brimm is now the career leader at NDC in passing yards (11,370), passing touchdowns (106), pass efficiency (147.1), average yards per pass (8), yards per completion (13.4), pass attempts (1,422) and completions (851). He is second in passing yards per game (206.7).
In terms of Mountain East Conference career rankings, Brimm is first in touchdown passes, total offensive yards and passing yards. He is second in completions (needs 26) and pass attempts (needs 33) and fifth in completion percentage (60). In NCAA Division II history, he ranks 24th in touchdown passes.
Noting the Battlers:Â Alderson Broaddus is still looking for its first win of the season and first win since Oct. 23, 2021. The Battlers have not won a home game since the 2019 campaign. This season, team has put up 30 points in two games (41 against Wheeling -Sept. 17, 30 against WV Wesleyan -Oct. 22). The Battlers nearly had a victory on Oct. 22, when they played West Virginia Wesleyan. In the first half of that game, Dawson Skinner threw a couple touchdown passes and after Joao Lima hit his third field goal of the day with 8:35 to go in the third quarter, AB led 23-7. WVWC started a comeback and scored on back-to-back drives in the third to close within two. Both teams scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter, but a field goal with 4:03 to go put the Bobcats in front for good. Last week, Concord pulled ahead 43-0 against the Battlers, early in the third quarter. Levi Gullion threw a couple late touchdowns to get AB on the board.
Marvin Sims leads the lead this season, by far, in receiving yards, with 739, and touchdown catches, with six. Three quarterbacks have appeared in at least five games for AB and the offense averages just 16.5 points per contest. On the defensive side, Michael Schweinefuss is currently fourth in the country with 65 solo tackles.
