Men’s Soccer wraps up regular season with two games this week

This Week: After playing just two games over the past two weeks, Notre Dame College men's soccer has a full slate this week to end the regular season. The Falcons travel to Concord, on Oct. 26, for a 3:30 p.m. start. NDC comes home on Oct. 30 to play Alderson Broaddus University. The seniors will be celebrated before the game, with a scheduled kickoff time of 12 p.m.

Records: Notre Dame enters the week with a record of 12-3-1 (10-3-1 MEC), sitting in third place in the Mountain East Conference standings with 31 conference points. Concord has a 4-10-2 record, and the Mountain Lions have gone 3-10-1 in conference play. Alderson Broaddus is currently 2-12-2 (2-11-1 MEC). CU and AB sit in eighth and ninth, respectively, in the MEC standings.

Updated MEC Tournament Details: The MEC men's soccer tournament, set to begin on Nov. 1, will expand to six teams, from the usual four. The top two seeds will receive a bye in the quarterfinal round, as the three seed hosts the six seed and the four seed hosts the five seed.

Coaches Corner: Carl Nolan is in his seventh season as head coach of the Notre Dame program and 19th as a member of the coaching staff. He currently has an overall coaching record of 75-30-10, while going 64-20-7 against MEC competition. Luke Duffy is in his first year on the sideline of the Concord men's team and has coached both the men's and women's teams this season. Aron Bassoff is in his first season with Alderson Broaddus.

Rankings: Notre Dame is ranked 21st in the latest United Soccer Coaches (USC) Division II top 25 poll. NDC is also under consideration as a top 12 regional team in Super Region One. The top 10 teams from the four super regions earn a bid into the NCAA Division II tournament.

Series History: Notre Dame has gone 17-0-1 against Concord since the two teams first met in 2013. Earlier this season, the Falcons defeated CU, 7-1, the most goals scored by the Falcons in a game this season. The Falcons are 3-1 all-time against Alderson Broaddus and took down the Battlers by a score of 2-1, in September.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame has lost just one game since Sept. 7. In that time, the Falcons have gone 10-1-1. Last week, the Falcons played one game and defeated West Virginia Wesleyan 4-0. The teams were scoreless after one half, but then the offense opened up for NDC. Connor O'Reilly scored the first goal in 61st minute. Taylor Dyson, who also had two assists in the game, added the second goal, before Carlos Almeida and Ned Dry each scored a goal of their own. The Falcons outshot WVWC, 20-6.

The Falcons rank in the top 15 in NCAA Division II in multiple categories. NDC ranks ninth in the country in goal differential (plus-27), 10th in shutout percentage (56.2-percent), 11th in both total goals (40) and shots on goal per game (7.9), 12th in goals per game (2.5) and 14th in total points (112). The Falcons are also 17th in total assists with 32.

Individually, Taylor Dyson ranks 10th in Division II in total assists, with nine, he is 15th in total points, with 27. Dyson leads the MEC in both of those categories, as well. He ranks eighth in D2 in shots on goal per game (2) and 16th in points per game (1.8). Connor O'Reilly is seventh in the conference with eight goals. Pedro Alves has a goal against average of .810, which is third best in the MEC.

Noting the Mountain Lions: Concord snapped a six-game losing streak by putting together back-to-back wins last week. CU defeated Wheeling (2-0) and Alderson Broaddus (4-3) to double its win total on the season. Wheeling did not go down without a fight in Concord's second shutout of the season. The Mountain Lions' goalkeeper Tommy Smith saved a career-high 11 shots as Wheeling took 26 shots in the contest. CU scored a season-high four goals in the win over Alderson Broaddus, over the weekend, sweeping the season series with AB.

Ricardo Chinea-Pegler earned MEC Offensive Player of the Week after he recorded eight points last week. He scored one goal and had an assist against Wheeling and then scored two goals and had an assist against Alderson Broaddus.

Goalkeeper Keegan Grant, who has started 10 games for CU, saves 4.2 shots per game, which is fourth in the MEC. Ricardo Chinea-Pegler leads the team with six goals, three assists and 15 points.

Noting the Battlers: Alderson Broaddus' only two wins this season have come against West Liberty. The Battlers are currently on a six-game losing streak, and have been shutout three times since the calendar turned to October.

Last week, AB's Nathan Bouard scored in the 48th minute against Frostburg State. That 1-0 lead would stand until FSU scored in the 75th and 87th minute to win, 2-1. On Sunday, Alderson Broaddus scored a season-high three goals and still fell to Concord, 4-3.

Even after missing a couple games earlier this season, Diego Gomez has 100 saves on the year and averages 6.7 saves per contest, ranking first in both the conference and the country. Andreas Rossak and Nathan Bouard both lead the team with three goals.
