Box Score 4 LOCK HAVEN, P.a. – Notre Dame College volleyball played a total of four games is weekend as a part of the Lock Haven Invitational that featured NDC, Slippery Rock, Roberst Wesleyan, Malone and the host school Lock Haven. The Falcons collected their first win of 2021 in dominating fashion over Slippery Rock 3-0. This win also marks the first career victory for Co-Head Coaches
Hannah Watson and
Anthony Mezacapa.
A nail bitter of a first set was put to rest by
Kelsie Palmer as NDC took the set 28-26. A slew of attack errors by the Rock opened the door for Notre Dame to claim set two 25-17. The dominance of the Falcons came on full display in set three as
Grace Smotek and
Kaye Dregalla put the finishing touches on a game one sweep 25-12.
A balanced attack from Dregalla, Palmer, Smotek, and
Samantha Comer paved way for the 3-0 sweep of the Rock on Friday morning. Dregalla led the way for NDC with nine kills, Palmer, Smotek and Comer added eight kills apiece,
Carli Derda tallied five, with
Katie Richardson and
Blaire Barr rounding out the attack for the Falcons by collecting three and one kill, respectfully.
It was the artistry of
Jayme Zoeckler and
McKenzie Andrix which set up the attack NDC. Zoeckler led Notre Dame with 19 assists, while Andrix facilitated 15 assists of her own.
Amelia Kaeberlein held down the fort by collecting 30 digs in the match. Smotek added 16 digs and
Ellie Schenk totaled 13.
On the serve, three Falcons tallied service aces in Richardson, Andrix and Schenk. In addition, at the net NDC recorded five blocks.
In total, NDC grabbed 50 points and out hit the Rock with a hit percentage of .184. Slippery Rock managed 33 points and a hit percentage of .021.
Match two brought much of the same for Watson, Mezacapa and the Falcons. The coaching duo picked up their second career win after taking care of the Redhawks from Roberts Wesleyan 3-0.
Leaders during match two for NDC were
Blaire Barr with eight kills, Andrix with 26 assists, Kaeberlein leads NDC in digs again with 16 and
Carly Emerson added two blocks.
Day two brought more of the same for NDC volleyball. The Falcons kicked off the morning with their third sweep in as many tries this season by knocking off Malone 3-0. For Malone, it is their first loss of the season after beginning 2-0.
Palmer brought the hammer for the Falcons as she converted her 30 attacks into a match-high 17 kills and a hit percentage of .533. Dregalla and Comer added seven kills apiece, while Richardson (6), Smotek (5) and Derda (4) also got in on the attack.
Andrix once again was the lead facilitator for the Falcons with 22 assists. Zoeckler (10) and Kaeberlein (9) tallied a handful of assists of their own.
Kaeberlein is the anchor in the back for Notre Dame as she posted a match-high 21 digs to sure ensure the victory. Smotek and Andrix also added a handful of digs with 14 and nine, respectfully. In addition, Smotek had her serve working with three service aces.
In match four, the final match at the Lock Haven Invitational, Notre Dame dropped their first set of the season but rebounded to a 3-1 victory over the hosts. The turning point of the match came after NDC dropped set two, they responded by taking set three in commanding fashion 25-6.
Palmer once again led the attack for Notre Dame with a team-high ten kills. Derda (9), Dregalla (8), Smotek (6) and Comer (5) were also key contributors for the Falcons who faced adversity for the first time this season.
The facilitating tandem of Andrix (18) and Zoeckler (14) once again were pivotal to the success of the Falcons this weekend.
A new program record and season-high total in digs was registered by the team leader in Kaeberlein. The senior recorded 40 digs en route to the four-set victory. She improves on her previously held record of 38 digs in a four-set match.
As a team, NDC tallied 41 kills, 38 assists, 91 digs and eight service aces in game four.
Upon conclusion of the weekend, Notre Dame College volleyball will travel to D'Youville College with an undefeated record on the line come Monday Sept. 6 at 12 p.m.
