This Week: Notre Dame College has a pair of games on the schedule this week. They will stay home to battle West Liberty University on Sept. 15 and then make the trip to Beckley, W.Va. to play Concord University on Sept. 19. Both games are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
Records: NDC started their season against No. 1 University of Charleston on Sunday, falling 2-0. West Liberty is currently 2-2 with a 1-2 MEC record, while Concord is 0-4 (0-3 MEC).
Coaches Corner: Carl Nolan is in his sixth season as head coach of the Notre Dame program. He has a record of 54-23-7, and is 45-14-4 in MEC play. Sean Regan is in his third season at the helm of West Liberty. He has an overall record of 9-20-1 and an 8-18-1 MEC record. Steve Barrett enters his 19th campaign with Concord men's soccer. He has a record of 76-196-20.
Rankings: None of these teams are ranked in the United Soccer Coaches top 25 poll.
Series History: Notre Dame has been very successful against both teams. They are 5-0 against West Liberty, since the Hilltoppers started their program in 2018. Against Concord, NDC holds a 14-0-1 mark since the 2013 season.
Noting the Falcons: In a tough season opener, Notre Dame played the top ranked team in Division II. The Falcons and Charleston were scoreless after one half of play, but the Golden Eagles scored twice in the final 45 minutes.
Lukas Hackaa led the team with two shots in the game and
Carlos Almeida had a shot on goal. Looking back, NDC dropped their season opener in 2019 and 2020 but went on to play in the MEC Tournament Championship game both seasons.
Noting the Hilltoppers: West Liberty started the fall 2021 season with an impressive 3-1 victory over Mercyhurst, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first half. In the conference preseason poll, Mercyhurst was voted as the top team in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division. In that game, Adam Lynch had a goal and an assist, while Vitor Otsuka and Mikel Ubeda both had a goal. Goalkeeper Noah Underwood added four saves. Last week, WLU shutout Concord (2-0), on the road but fell to Frostburg State (1-0). In the game against FSU, the shots were nearly even at 9-8 in favor of Frostburg. Underwood has recorded 16 saves already this season, which is second highest the MEC. West Liberty has scored four of their five goals this season in the first half of games.
Noting the Mountain Lions: Concord is still looking for their first goal of the season after being shutout in their first four contests. Last week, the Mountain Lions fell to West Liberty by a score of 2-0 and then lost to Davis & Elkins 5-0 after allowing four goals within a 12-minute span in the second stanza. The Senators outshot CU, 22-1, taking 11 shots in each half. Goalkeeper Kyle Brown leads the MEC with 17 saves on the season.
