WARREN, OH — The Notre Dame College men's and women's golf teams played The Lakes course at Avalon Golf and Country Club this week in the Mountain East Conference tournament. The women finished sixth, and the men finished seventh in the final team standings.
The Lakes (Pete Dye) is a par-72 course that offers 5 sets of tees that range from 4904 yards to 7551 yards, and was home to the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic from 1993 to 2000. During the MEC tournament, the men hit from the fifth-position tees (7551 total yards, 76.5 course rating), while the women hit from the third-position tees (6,491 total yards, 71.3 course rating) in a shotgun format. The total field entering Tuesday was 44 players for both the men and women.
The women's team finished in sixth-place by the end of the second round on Thursday with 176 shots over par for a total score of 752. The team averaged 4.03 shots on par-three holes with a total of 33 shots over par from par-threes alone, which was the third-best in the field. On par-four holes, the team averaged 5.40 shots with a total of 112 shots-over-par on par-fours alone, which was fourth-best in the field. The par-fives were the bright spot for the NDC women's team, finishing second in the field as a team with an average score of 5.97 on par-fives, and only 31 shots over par coming from par-five holes.
Erin Frey
- Frey went out of the first round on Tuesday +11. She made bogey on seven holes, and double-bogeyed two on the back-nine. After making the turn, she made par on holes two, three, and the par-five sixth hole to finish +8 for a round total of 90 and tied her for 18th place on the tournament leaderboard.
- In the final round, she made par on the first two holes, then went bogey, double-bogey, bogey, before making par on two par-fours holes, numbers 15 and 17. She bogeyed the par-three on 16, and made a triple-bogey on 18. When she made the turn, she made bogey on every hole on except holes two and eight, making a double-bogey and par respectively.
- Frey earned the highest finish on the Falcons women's team, landing in a solo 20th spot for her +35 performance (179). She made eight pars, 22 bogeys, five double-bogeys, and a triple-bogey.
Olivia Jackson
- Jackson finished one shot and one place behind her teammate, shooting +36, and ending up in 21st place.
- She finished with an 85 (+13) after the opening round of the tournament, which was enough to tie her for seventh-place. She made three pars on the back nine to start, and then came in +5 after making a double to start the front nine. She made par, bogey, birdie, par, bogey, double-bogey, and then finished with back-to-back pars.
- Although she went out with a score of 43 to start her final round, she came in +16 to finish with 180 shots. She made 10 pars, 13 bogeys, 12 double-bogeys, and one birdie.
- In regards to the entire field on par-three holes, Olivia's average score of 3.63 shots and five shots over par earned her the eighth-best performer in the MEC.
Kara Leatherman
- Leatherman finished her first round of the tournament shooting +24, and tying for 26th.
- In the final round of the tournament, she went out +10, and came in with her best score for nine holes of the two rounds at +8, and finished with a round total of 90.
- She made seven pars, 18 bogeys, nine double-bogeys, and two triple-bogeys.
Heather Gerome
- Gerome finished in 35th place wiith a score of 207 shots. She made three pars, 16 bogeys, eight double-bogeys, and eight triple-bogeys.
The men's team finished seventh, dropping one spot from Tuesday's opening round with their total of +106 shots to par (682 shots total). The NDC men had an average score of 3.98 on par-three holes, with +39 shots total. On par-four holes, they averaged 4.98 shots, with +98 shots contributing to the total. Par-fives were a brighter spot for them, with only +19 shots over par and a 5.48 average on the longer holes. The team made 59 pars and eight birdies total, and were one of three teams that made an eagle.
Jimmy Graham
- Graham earned the highest finish on the men's team. He finished 15th overall with scores of +20 (164).
- He finished his first round +13 and went +8 on the back-nine to start, but turned it around on the front nine with five-straight pars (+6).
- He balled out in the final round of the tournament, starting with three-straight pars on holes one, two, and three. He then bogeyed the next three holes, and was able to make par on the seventh to keep him at +3. He double-bogeyed the eighth hole, but was able to birdie the ninth hole to make the turn with a score of 40 (+4). On the back nine, he began the 10th and 11th holes with two bogeys, and made par on the 13th hole before making another bogey on 14. On 15, he made an eagle, to put him at +5 heading into the final three holes of the tournament, which me made par on. He finished the back nine with a score of 39, and 79 for the round.
- He made 13 pars, 14 bogeys, five double-bogeys, two birdies, and an eagle.
erk Tuangthong
- Tuangthong finished his first round of the tournament tied for 28th-place at +14 (86), and bested his score by five shots in the final round to move up six spots and finish in a tie for 22nd.
- He ended up +23, with 167 shots total. 17 were bogeys, two were double-bogeys, and only one was a triple-bogey. He made 15 pars, and one birdie. His average shot on a par-three hole was 3.63, landing him 12th-best in the field from close-distance to the pin.
George Tomaras
- Tomaras also finished his first round of the tournament at +14 by shooting an 86, and tying him for 28th-place with his teammate.
- His final round put him at +11 going out, and +19 coming in, and he fell to tie to 39th-place on the final standings with a score of 177.
- He made 13 pars, 15 bogeys, five double-bogeys, two triple-bogeys, and one birdie throughout the entirety of the contest.
Alex Rapp
- Rapp went out +2 through the first nine holes of the tournament aided by two birdies on holes 14 and 17, and four pars. He came in with a 42 on the front nine to finish, making another birdie on the sixth hole, and making par on two others. Finished with a score of 80 for 18 holes (+8).
- He dropped 15 shots on his final round of the tournament, finishing in 37th-place at +31.
- He made 10 pars, 15 bogeys, three double-bogeys, three triple-bogeys, and three birdies.
Spencer Crane
- Crane finished 43rd overall at +49.
- He made seven pars and a birdie.
Jimmy Graham earned All-Conference Honorable Mention for his performance in the MEC Tournament. He was the only Falcon to earn conference honors.
The University of Charleston and Davis & Elkins took home trophies on the women's and men's side respectively. UC finished with a total team score of 673 (+97). Davis & Elkins finished +30, for a total team score of 606.
The tournament was originally scheduled for three rounds beginning on Tuesday (April 20), but the Wednesday round was canceled due to snow.
