AFCA recognizes Lee on All-America team

WACO, Texas – The American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) has released its All-America teams for the 2021 season. Linebacker Guam Lee becomes just the second player in Notre Dame College football history to be named All-American from the AFCA. (Release)

Lee adds this to his growing list of 2021 awards, which includes becoming the first player from NDC to be named Mountain East Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He was named All-MEC First Team for the fourth time and was recognized by the Division II Conference Commissioners Association as an All-Super Region 1 First Team member for the third time in his career.

The Farmington Hills, Mich. native takes a spot on the AFCA Second Team Defense. The only other player in program history to be given All-America honors from the AFCA is Jaleel McLaughlin.

This season, Lee was a leader on a defense that ranked first in NCAA Division II in takeaways (36), interceptions (21), turnover margin (+19) and second in defensive touchdowns (6). He had 23 tackles for loss, which was tied for the third highest amount in Division II. The senior recorded at least a half tackle for loss in all but three games.

Lee broke an NDC program single-season record with five forced fumbles and tied an NDC record with three fumble recoveries. He led the team this season, and was three shy of an NDC record, with 58 solo tackles. That number also put him 23rd among Division II players. The Harrison High School product also led the squad with 87 total tackles and was second with 29 assisted tackles. Lee totaled nine sacks, ranking 21st in D2 in that category.

This season, Lee helped lead the Falcons to their fourth consecutive MEC Championship and third straight trip to the NCAA Division II Playoffs.

In NDC career ranks, he now leads the program in solo tackles (194), total tackles (344), forced fumbles (8), fumbles recovered (8), fumbles returned for touchdown (4) and is tied for first in tackles for loss (55). In Mountain East Conference career ranks, he is the career leader in fumbles recovered and is tied for the lead in fumbles recovered for a touchdown.
