Volleyball rounds out regular season with two road games this week

This week: The Notre Dame College volleyball team will play two road contests this week to round out their 2021 regular season. On Tuesday Nov. 9 the Falcons will travel to Frostburg State to play at 7 p.m. before hitting the road again to face Alderson Broaddus on Friday Nov. 12 at 7 p.m.

Records: NDC will begin the week at 15-14, 6-8 MEC and in seventh place in the Mountain East Conference. FSU is currently 8-18, 5-9 MEC and in the eighth and final playoff spot in the MEC. AB enters this week at 6-15, 2-12 MEC and in 11th place in the MEC. It is important to note that the top eight teams in the conference advance into the MEC Tournament next week.

Coaches Corner: Hannah Watson and Anthony Mezacapa are Co-Head Coaches of the Notre Dame volleyball program. In their first season at the helm, Watson and Mezacapa have coached NDC to a 15-14 record. Kylie Heyne is 8-28 in her second season as head coach of Frostburg State. Abby Stoner is in her fifth season with Alderson Broaddus after spending the previous eight seasons as an assistant coach on the staff.

Rankings: None of these teams are ranked in the AVCA Coaches Poll.

Series History: NDC holds a perfect 5-0 record over FSU dating back to 2019 and including the Falcons 3-1 win over the Bobcats on Oct. 2. Notre Dame is 4-2 all-time against Alderson Broaddus since 2011. NDC bested AB 3-0 back on Oct. 12.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame College is coming off a tough stretch in which they faced the top two teams in the MEC North Division last week. On Tuesday, NDC fell to Fairmont State on the road, 19-25, 19-25, 13-25. Notre Dame was led by Kaye Dregalla with 11 kills, Jayme Zoeckler with 18 assists and Amelia Kaeberlein with 16 digs. On Friday, Notre Dame dropped their final home contest of the season to top-ranked Wheeling, 25-27, 14-25, 13-25. Dregalla paced NDC again with eight kills, McKenzie Andrix totaled 14 assists, while Kaeberlein had 14 digs to show for.

Notre Dame will turn to Dregalla to finish off the season strong, as the former All-MEC performer has led NDC in kills, each of the last four matches. Dergalla has totaled 226 kills this season which is second to Kelsie Palmer who will also look to jump start this Falcon squad as she has totaled a team-high 263 kills this season. Andrix (558) and Zoeckler (436) will continue to do their jobs as NDC's setters, as they look to eclipse 1,000 total assists amongst themselves this season. In terms of defense, Kaeberlein has been one of the best on this front across all of Division II. The libero has generated 5.92 digs per set and a total of 521 digs, which ranks her 2nd and 3rd respectively in the MEC and 11th and 25th respectively in Division II.

On average for the season, Notre Dame has played to the tune of 11.7 kills per set, 11.1 assists per set, 1.4 service aces per set, 18.6 digs per set and 1.7 blocks per set. The Falcons have surrendered 12.4 kills per set, 11.5 assists per set, 1.5 service aces per set, 18.6 digs per set and 1.8 blocks per set.

Noting the Bobcats: Frostburg State is coming off a tough week in which they were swept in both matches. On Tuesday, the Bobcats traveled to Wheeling and lost 9-25, 25-27, 25-27. On Friday, FSU returned home but fell quickly to West Liberty, 16-25, 15-25, 16-25. Frostburg State will face NDC on a three-game losing streak come Tuesday, as the Bobcats have yet to win a set since their Oct. 29 win over Charleston.

Beverly Braun is a player to watch out for on Frostburg State as she has amassed the 3rd most kills in the MEC this season at 341 (3.63 kills per set). She is far and wide the team-leader in kills with over 100 more than Jackie Sterenberg's 231.

On average for the season, Frostburg State has generated 11.7 kills per set, 10.9 assists per set, 1.5 service aces per set, 17.7 digs per set and 1.6 blocks per set. The Bobcats have allowed opponents to 12.5 kills per set, 11.8 assists per set, 1.7 service aces per set, 17.9 digs per set and 1.8 blocks per set.

Noting the Battlers: Alderson Broaddus is entering the week after dropping their previous two matches last week. On Tuesday, AB traveled to West Liberty where they lost 21-25, 25-21, 16-25, 14-25. On Friday, the Battlers hosted Fairmont State as the Fighting Falcons bested AB in straight sets, 14-25, 17-25, 20-25. The Battlers will travel to Wheeling on Tuesday Nov. 9 before hosting NDC come Friday evening.

Jocie Fisher (197), Schylar Shepherd (155) and Kiley Sparks (155) offer balanced attack for Alderson Broaddus as the trio are the team-leaders in kills. Sparks is a player to keep an eye on as she has posted a season hit percentage of 32% on 357 total attacks, which is the 4th best mark in the MEC.

On average for the season, Alderson Broaddus has tallied 10.9 kills per set, 10.4 assists per set, 1.7 service aces per set, 14.4 digs per set and 1.5 blocks per set.
