Men's soccer hosts West Virginia Wesleyan this weekend

This Week: Notre Dame College men's soccer has one game this week, hosting West Virginia Wesleyan College on Oct. 10, at noon. Three points separate the two teams in the Mountain East Conference standings.

Records: NDC holds a record of 5-2 (5-2 MEC) after going 2-0 last week. WVWC picked up a 2-0 win over Frostburg State earlier this week and improved to 6-3 (4-3 MEC).

Coaches Corner: Carl Nolan is in his sixth season as head coach of the Notre Dame program. He has a record of 59-24-7, and is 50-15-4 in MEC play. Gavin Donaldson is in his 31st season as the head coach of the W.Va. Wesleyan program. He has a record of 359-195-56.

Rankings: Neither of these teams are ranked in the United Soccer Coaches top 25 poll.

Series History: Notre Dame has faced West Virginia Wesleyan 16 times since 2013 and hold a record of 11-3-2. Last spring, NDC snuck past the Bobcats with a 1-0 victory.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame did not play on Wednesday, but they are coming off a week in which they won two games against MEC competition. After a thrilling 3-2 comeback win in overtime against Alderson Broaddus, the Falcons scored four times to defeat West Liberty 4-1 and sweep the season series against the Hilltoppers. Lukas Hackaa was named MEC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three goals with two assists. Against Alderson Broaddus, Hackaa was credited with an assist following a free kick that led to the first of two goals in the final ten minutes of regulation. And in the 106th minute, he scored the game-winner. He also hit the game-winner against WLU, scoring NDC's second goal in the 42nd minute. Hackaa still ranks first in NCAA Division II in assists per game (1.14) and is second in total assists (8).

As a team, the Falcons lead the country in goals per game (4.29), assists per game (4.29) and points per game (12.86). They are second in D2 with 30 assists and 90 points, and rank fifth with 30 total goals. Forwards Ned Dry and Ailton Fagner Silva have been leading the way. Dry is second in Division II in points per game (2.86), fourth in goals per game (1.14), 10th in total points (20) and 13th in total goals (8). Silva ranks sixth in goals per game (1) and seventh in points per game (2.50).

Noting the WVWC Bobcats: West Virginia Wesleyan bounced back with close wins over Seton Hill and Frostburg State following back-to-back losses to West Liberty and No. 7 Davis and Elkins. In their 2-0 win over Frostburg State this week, W.Va. Wesleyan's Javier De Ona Garcia and Nika Monaselidze had the goals. The Bobcats are 3-3 in their last six, but they were tested with games against No. 1 Charleston and D&E in the span of 10 days. Although WVWC lost those games, the score of both contests was 2-1.

The Bobcats rank third in the conference as they allow 0.89 goals per game. Their defense has three shutouts this season and has not allowed more than two goals in any game. Monaselidze is tied for third in the MEC with five goals and ranks tied for second with six assists.
