Men's Soccer By Jacob Bunner

This week, men's soccer heads to Wheeling before coming back home

This week: Notre Dame College men's soccer will hit the road to play Wheeling University on September 25, at 7 p.m. and then they come home to battle Frostburg State University on September 29, with a 1 p.m. start time.

Records: NDC has a record of 3-2, overall, and 3-1 in conference play. Wheeling holds a 1-3 record (0-2 MEC) and Frostburg State is 2-2-1 (2-1-1 MEC).

Coaches Corner: Carl Nolan is in his fourth season at the helm of the NDC men's soccer program. He currently holds a record of 38-17-4, overall, and a 30-10-2 record in the MEC. James Regan enters his 35th season with Wheeling, holding a record of 367-244-55. Keith Byrnes is in his 18th campaign with Frostburg State, holding a 168-131-35 record.

Rankings: None of these teams were in the United Soccer Coaches poll.

Series History: Notre Dame holds an all-time record of 12-3-2 against WU but they have never played FSU, who just entered the NCAA Division II this year.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame was looking to get back on track last week and they certainly did that against West Liberty and Concord. On September 19, NDC limited WLU to just four shots and shut them out, in a 3-0 victory. Against Concord, on September 22, the Falcons fell behind early but tied it up before halftime. NDC took off in the second half, scoring three times and taking 21 shots in a 4-1 win. Giulio Bellei was named MEC Defensive Player of the Week after leading the defense, allowing just six shots and one goal over two games. He also assisted on a goal against the Hilltoppers and then scored against Concord. Varis Khera led the offense with the first goal of the game, the game winner, over West Liberty and then the final NDC goal against the Mountain Lions. He leads the MEC with 3.6 shots per game. Evans Armah also scored in both games, giving Notre Dame a 3-0 lead over West Liberty and tying the game at 1 with Concord.

Noting the Cardinals: Wheeling's one win this season came against Pitt-Johnstown (1-0) on September 14. In their three losses, the Cardinals have lost by at least two goals in each of them. In conference play, they have been shut out by West Virginia Wesleyan and Frostburg State. Notre Dame and Wheeling have already faced off in, what is now, a postponed game. On September 11, WU played well against the Falcons on Mueller Field, but due to lightning delays the game did not reach the 70-minute mark, three hours after the game began. Therefore, the game was postponed and will have to be made up later in the season. Lucas Fievet and Javier Mangado have the two goals that Wheeling has scored this season. The Cardinals have used two goal keepers this season after Josh Zimmerman started the campaign, James Serman has started two contests, including their win. The Cardinals save percentage is 0.579.

Noting the Bobcats: Frostburg State has had success in their first go around in the MEC so far this season. They defeated West Liberty and Wheeling, each, by a score of 3-0. They tied with Concord and only lost by one goal to Urbana. In their game against Urbana last week, Frostburg State was winning, 1-0, at halftime, but Urbana came back to win in the second half. The Bobcats took eight shots on goal in the game, but Urbana's Jakob Henriksen saved seven. FSU had eight shots on goal in their win over Wheeling, and converted on three of them. Randy Putnam has scored two goals this season with one being a game-winner. Tamino Brown has recorded a goal and two assists. The defense is allowing 0.80 goals per game, which is second best in the MEC. Joel Assal starts in goal for the Bobcats and has a save percentage of .789 with 15 saves.
