Men's soccer looks to bounce back against West Liberty, Concord

This week: Notre Dame College men's soccer travels to play West Liberty University on September 19 at 7:30 p.m. They will then play a home match with Concord University on September 22 at 1 p.m.

Records: NDC has a record of 1-2, overall, and 1-1 in conference play. West Liberty has gotten off to an 0-3 start to the season, with all three coming against MEC opponents. Concord is 2-1-1 with a MEC record of 1-1-1.

Coaches Corner: Carl Nolan is in his fourth season at the helm of the NDC men's soccer program. He currently holds a record of 36-17-4, overall, with a 28-10-2 record in the MEC. Sean Regan is in his first season as the head coach at WLU. Steve Barrett is in his 16th campaign at Concord and holds a record of 73-175-19.

Rankings: None of these teams were in the United Soccer Coaches poll.

Series History: Notre Dame swept the season series (2-0) with West Liberty last season in the Hilltoppers' inaugural campaign and swept Concord. The Falcons hold an all-time record of 11-0-1 against CU since 2013.

Noting the Falcons: NDC is looking to get back over the .500 mark after a wild week. Last Wednesday, the Falcons played Wheeling University at home, but multiple lighting delays caused the game to be postponed and moved to another date. On Sunday, Notre Dame and Charleston were scoreless for 61 minutes, before UC scored the first goal and ended up winning 3-0. Last season, the Falcons swept the season series with West Liberty (4-0, 1-0) and Concord (3-0, 5-0) and did not allow a goal to either team in the four total matchups. Those were four of the 12 shutouts that Notre Dame recorded last season. This season, although the Falcons have just three goals, they are still getting looks at the goal as they are taking 10 shot per contest. Daniele De Angelis, who was second in NCAA Division II in shutouts with 12, has nine saves and a shutout this season. De Angelis is the Falcons program leader in saves and shutouts.

Noting the Hilltoppers: After being shutout in seven of their 10 losses last season, West Liberty has not scored a goal yet this season, and have been shut out three times. In the first season as a NCAA Division II program last season, the Hilltoppers outscored their opponents in the first half 11-9. However, WLU was outscored 15-6 in the second stanza. Although WLU was shutout eight times in 2018, they scored three goals, or more, in four games. The 2019 campaign will bring about a new looking team as the Hilltoppers lost their top three goal scorers from last season and both of their goalkeepers.

Noting the Mountain Lions: Concord has played four very close games so far in 2019. Their two wins have come against King University and West Liberty, and both were decided by two goals or less. The Mountain Lions tied with Frostburg State and lost 2-0 to Davis & Elkins. Twin brothers Matt and Michael Shelor have combined for two of the three goals for CU this season. Maxime Ramioulle, who was named to the MEC All-MEC First Team with eight goals in 2018, currently has one assists, but no goals. Concord is taking 10.2 shots per game, while that mark is 12.2 for the opponents. Goalkeeper Kyle Brown returns this season and already has 19 saves and a save percentage of .905.
