Notre Dame hosts Wheeling before traveling to Charleston

This week: Notre Dame College men's soccer will come home to battle Wheeling University on September 11, beginning at 2 p.m. on Mueller Field. They will then travel to the University of Charleston for a 7:30 p.m. matchup on September 15.

Records: NDC has a record of 1-1 after the first week of play. Wheeling lost their only game of the season to Seton Hill, last Thursday. Charleston has started their campaign with a 1-1 record.

Coaches Corner: Carl Nolan is in his fourth season at the helm of the NDC men's soccer program. He currently holds a record of 36-16-4, overall, and a 28-9-2 record in the MEC. James Regan is now in his 35th season with Wheeling with a record of 366-242-55. Dan Stratford enters his fourth campaign as the head man at UC with a record of 40-3-2.

Series History: Notre Dame has found success against Wheeling University, putting together a record of 12-3-2 since the two teams first met in 2005. Against Charleston, the Falcons are 3-12-2 all-time.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame had an up and down week to begin the season. The Falcons took an early lead against Gannon, in the 13th minute of the opening game. They would hold that lead for much of the game until the Golden Knights scored twice to come back and win 2-1. NDC bounced back in their first MEC game against Davis & Elkins. After a scoreless first half, Arthur Favero assisted on the first goal of the game, finding Arthur Moraes for a goal in the 48th minute. Niklas Ringdahl Bohlin put NDC up 2-0 with a penalty kick later in the game. Favero was named MEC Offensive Player of the Week after assisting on two of the Falcons' three goals.

Noting the Cardinals: Last season, Wheeling University went 10-6-3, overall, and 9-5 in the MEC. Against NDC, they were 1-1-1. The Cardinals scored 1.68 goals per game and the defense shutout opponents nine times. After tying Seton Hill in the season opener last season, SHU broke a 1-1 tie and scored twice in the second half. The Cardinals took eight fewer shots than the Griffins, in the 3-1 loss, while Seton Hill converted on three of their four shots on goal. Lucas Fievet had the only goal in the 30th minute, giving WU the lead, at the time.

Noting the Golden Eagles: Charleston came into the season ranked eighth in the country, and look to make the NCAA Division II Tournament for the eighth time since 2010. However, the Golden Eagles lost their first season opener since 2011, falling to Ohio Valley University, 1-0, last Thursday. Charleston had seven shots, but could not score, while Ohio Valley were held scoreless until the 74th minute. The last time the Golden Eagles were held scoreless in a loss was on October 12, 2016 against Urbana University. UC put four on the scoreboard, including a three goal first half, against West Liberty on Sunday. The Golden Eagles took 21 shots in the game and held WLU to just two.
