Men's soccer looks to finish the regular season strong

This Week: Notre Dame College men's soccer will close out the 2019 regular season with a road game against Concord University on November 6, beginning at 2:30 p.m. The Falcons then come home to battle Urbana University on Mueller Field. That game will be played on November 10, at 12 p.m.

Makeup Game: On November 4, Notre Dame faced Wheeling University in a game that was originally scheduled to be played on September 11, but was postponed due to weather. The Falcons beat the Cardinals, 3-1, on Monday.

Records: NDC has a record of 10-3-2, overall, and 10-2-2 in conference play. Concord enters the week with a record of 3-10-2 (2-10-2 MEC). Urbana is 9-4-3 with a conference record of 9-3-2.

Photo Finish: The Falcons currently occupy second place in the MEC standings with 32 points, behind Charleston, who has 41. Urbana is third with 29 points and West Virginia Wesleyan is close behind in fourth with 28. The top four teams in the conference make the MEC Tournament and the top two seeds host. Three of the four teams have two games remaining, while Charleston has just one game on the schedule.

Coaches Corner: Carl Nolan is in his fourth season at the helm of the NDC men's soccer program. He currently holds a record of 45-18-6, overall, and has a 37-11-4 record in the MEC. Steve Barrett is in his 16th campaign with a record of 74-182-20. Nick Roberts is in his 12th season as head coach at UU. Since 2013, Urbana has put together a regular season record of 52-26-9 against MEC teams.

Rankings: None of the teams are ranked in the United Soccer Coaches poll. Notre Dame is ranked No. 11 in Super Region I according to the first regional rankings, which were released last week.

Series History: Notre Dame has a 12-0-1 record against Concord since the MEC formed in 2013. Since 2001, the Falcons are 14-6-2 against Urbana. NDC beat Concord and tied with Urbana, earlier this season.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame has taken care of business recently, winning three straight games and putting together a 4-0-1 record over their previous five games. Over that five game stretch, NDC has outscored their opponents 10-3. The Falcons earned points against two of the top four teams in the conference during this current run of five games, tying with Charleston and beating W.Va. Wesleyan. If the Falcons win on Sunday, they will be 7-0-1 at home, and it would mark the first time that they did not lose a home game in a season, since 2011. Since Carl Nolan took over as head coach in 2016, NDC has won at least 10 games every season and at least six home games. Daniele De Angelis holds the NDC record in every major goalkeeper category and he also is the active career leader in goalkeeper minutes in NCAA Division II (6,393.57). Among active career leaders at the DII level, the senior keeper is ninth in goals against average at 0.802, ninth in saves with 219 for his career and 10th in save percentage at 0.793. He is also 25th in Division II this season with a 0.76 goals against average. Niklas Ringdahl Bohlin is now 28th in the country, and tied for the MEC lead, with 10 goals. Bohlin and Varis Singh Khera each have three game winning goals, which rank 44th in the nation. Arthur Favero still leads the team in assists with four, to go along with his three goals. This season Notre Dame ranks second in the country and first in the conference with 7.47 corner kicks per game.

Noting the Mountain Lions: After their defense posted three shutouts in the first three games of the campaign, Concord has yet to record a fourth shutout in 2019. The Mountain Lions dove right into conference play with good results this season, tying Frostburg State and beating West Liberty. Since then, it has been a struggle. They have only beaten one other team in conference and went on an 0-9-1 stretch from September 15 until October 27. The final week of the schedule doesn't do CU any favors, as they face the top two teams in the conference, NDC and Charleston. Kyle Brown leads the conference and is 19th in NCAA DII with an average of 5.54 saves per game. He also leads the conference and ranks 28th nationally with 72 saves. Maxime Ramioulle leads the team with four goals and nine points. Concord has scored just 15 goals this season.

Noting the Blue Knights: Urbana has won nine MEC games for the first time since 2016. The Blue Knights started the season 0-2-1, but since that time, they have gone 9-2-2. Over their past seven contests, UU holds a 6-1 record, with their only loss coming to Charleston. They have three shutouts over their past seven games, highlighted by a 1-0 win over West Virginia Wesleyan, who trails them by one point in the conference standings. Since the MEC formed in 2013, NDC and Urbana have faced off three times in the final conference regular season game. The Falcons won in 2013 and 2018, while Urbana came out on top in 2014. Urbana knows how to put the ball in the net this season, ranking 31st in the country with 35 total goals and 39th in scoring offense with 2.19 goals per game. The team also ranks 46th in Division II with 6.88 shots on goal per game. Luke Nicholls leads the conference in assists per game (0.56) and total assists (9). Both of those numbers also rank in the top-10 nationally. Jasminko Dizdarevic leads the conference in goals per game (0.67), points per game (1.67), shots per game (3.67), shots on goal per game (1.60), total goals (10) and total points (25). In goal, Jakob Henriksen has a goals against average of 1.55 with a save percentage of 0.726.
