Volleyball tries to build on historic year with two games this week

This week: Notre Dame College volleyball will come home to play West Liberty University on November 5, at 6 p.m. The Falcons will then go back on the road to play Ohio Dominican University on November 8, at 6 p.m.

Records: Notre Dame is 19-10 this season, with an MEC record of 6-6. West Liberty currently sits at 15-11 with an MEC record of 7-4. Ohio Dominican has a record of 3-23 while they are 2-8 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

Coaches Corner: Travis Hinkle is in his second season as head coach at Notre Dame and has a record of 35-27 (14-14 MEC). Kayla Mull is in her eighth season with West Liberty. Last season, she led WLU to a 24-10 overall record. Jennifer Fekpe is in her fourth season as the head coach of ODU, leading the Panthers to a 6-25 record in 2018.

Rankings: None of these teams are ranked in the AVCA Coaches Poll.

Series History: Notre Dame is 5-10 against West Liberty, since the two teams first met in 2011. The Hilltoppers beat Notre Dame on October 11. The Falcons are 2-0 against Ohio Dominican, but have not played since 2017.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame ran into a tough stretch of MEC games, falling to No. 17 Wheeling University and West Virginia State University, last week. They did defeat the University of Charleston in four games, on Saturday, to end a three-game losing slide. That win was the first in program history against UC. Notre Dame's 19 wins this season is the most since 2008. This season, the Falcons lead the conference in assists (1,275), digs (1,914), kills (1,350), aces (191), aces per set (1.84) and attacks (4,023). Nationally, the team ranks third in attacks, fourth in assists and digs, seventh in kills, 13th in aces and 20th in digs per set (18.4). For the season, Alexandra Kaeberlein is currently third in the country in digs with 585 and 16th in digs per set at 5.74. Paige Staudacher is fifth nationally with 1,058 assists. Mary Kate McHugh now has 322 kills, which leads the conference. Staudacher also leads the team in aces with 34. Katie Richardson is at the top of the team with 67 blocks.

Career record watch: In the MEC history books Alexandra Kaeberlein is currently second in career digs (2,366), Mary Kate McHugh is fifth in career kills (1,510) and Paige Staudacher is second in career assists (3,687). Among active career leaders in DII, McHugh ranks fifth in career kills, second in attacks (4,626), 23rd in attacks per set (10.14) and 14th in matches played (126). Kaeberlein is third among active leaders in the nation in career digs, 23rd with a 5.07 digs per set average and seventh in matches played with 129. Staudacher is 12th in the nation among active leaders in career assists.

Noting the Hilltoppers: West Liberty got off to a tough start in MEC play and when they first battled the Falcons on October 11, WLU held a conference record of 1-3. Since their win over the Falcons that day, the Hilltoppers have gone 5-1 and are currently on a five-game winning. Four of their five victories during the winning streak have been sweeps. Madison Clayton leads the team with 181 kills as WLU has nearly 200 fewer kills this season than NDC. Renee Lemke has 423 assists on the season. Kailee Cunningham leads the team with 27 aces. West Liberty is a strong defensive team. Cunningham is first in MEC history and second among active leaders in Division II with 2,398 career digs. This season she is 35th in the country with 476 digs. Clayton has 64 blocks, including 16 solo blocks. The team has 128 blocks on the year. The Hilltoppers are ninth in the country with 39.62 attacks per set. They are also 25th in digs per set at 18.32. They rank second in the conference in digs (1,667) and attacks (3,605).

Noting the Panthers: After going winless in September, Ohio Dominican grabbed three wins in the month of October. They were able to defeat Ursuline College, Alderson Broaddus University and Rio Grande University. Of their 23 losses they've only gone to a fifth set three times. Amanda Remmetter leads the team with 283 kills and 2.86 kills per set. Carleigh Deitsch has 514 assists while, Emilee Fecht and Remmetter both have 27 aces. On defense, Allie Rutter has recorded 396 digs while Abbi Gillson leads the team with 65 blocks.
