Notre Dame readies for MEC Tournament

MEC Tournament: Notre Dame College men's soccer, who is No. 2 in the MEC Tournament, is slated to play West Virginia Wesleyan College, the three seed, on November 13, at 2 p.m. The game will be played on Mueller Field. The other semifinal matchup will be No. 1 University of Charleston hosting No. 4 Urbana University. That game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

Championship game: The MEC Championship will be played on November 17, at the highest remaining seed's campus.

Records: NDC has a record of 12-3-2, overall, and 12-2-2 in conference play. West Virginia Wesleyan enters the week with a 12-5-1 record, finishing with an 11-4-1 MEC mark. Urbana sits at 10-5-3 (10-4-2 MEC), while Charleston is 15-2-1 (15-0-1 MEC).

Coaches Corner: Carl Nolan is in his fourth season at the helm of the NDC men's soccer program. He currently holds a record of 47-18-6, overall, and has a 39-11-4 record in the MEC. Gavin Donaldson is in his 29th season on the sideline for Wesleyan, with a record of 349-187-55. Nick Roberts has 12 years of experience as the coach of UU, putting together a record of 53-27-9 against MEC opponents in the regular season. Dan Stratford has been at the helm of Charleston for three seasons. He holds an overall record of 54-4-5 and 39-0-3 against MEC opponents.

Rankings: Charleston is ranked 10th in the United Soccer Coaches poll. UC is currently tied for third in the Super Region I rankings, released last week, while Notre Dame is ranked No. 12 in the same region.

Series History: Notre Dame has a 10-3-1 record against W.Va. Wesleyan since 2013. The Falcons are 3-13-3 against Charleston since 2012 and 15-6-2 against Urbana since 2001. This season, NDC holds a record of 1-1 against WVWC, 0-1-1 versus Charleston and 1-0-1 against Urbana.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame won three games last week and enter the conference tournament on a five-game winning streak, with three shutouts in that span. Over their last 10 games, NDC has a 7-1-2 record. The Falcons are currently 7-0-1 at home, and that marks the first time that they did not lose a home game in the regular season, since 2013. Since Carl Nolan took over as head coach in 2016, NDC has won, at least, 10 games every season and, at least, six home games. Notre Dame will be facing West Virginia Wesleyan for the first time in the MEC Tournament. Niklas Ringdahl Bohlin leads the team with 11 goals and 25 points. He also has four game-winners this season, which ranks 22nd in the nation. Arthur Favero and Nicholas Felician are tied for the team lead with four assists. Daniele De Angelis has 42 saves on the year, a 0.68 goals against average and eight shutouts. He is currently tied for first in the conference with a 0.78 save percentage. Among active career leaders in Division II, De Angelis currently leads all goalkeepers with 6,573.57 career minutes in goal, he ranks ninth with 222 career saves, 12th in save percentage at 0.796 and he is eighth in goals against average (0.78).

Noting the Bobcats: With 12 wins, West Virginia Wesleyan has already doubled their win total from 2018. After losing back-to-back games to Charleston and Notre Dame on October 27 and 30, Wesleyan went on a tear, shutting out West Liberty, Frostburg State and Davis & Elkins to end the season. That three-game win streak allowed them to jump over Urbana for third place in the conference. They ended the regular season with nine shutouts. Since the MEC formed in 2013, the Bobcats have had four double-digit win seasons. Their 11 MEC wins this season are the most in program history. WVWC has won six road games this season, which is the most for the program since 2014. Lucas Falconieri and Nico Monaselidze both have six goals. Monaselidze has five game-winners this season, which leads the conference and is seventh in Division II. Joshua Tenney currently has five assists this season. Goalkeeper Jeremy Collins has 53 saves in 17 games this season. He has a 0.92 goals against average and a 0.77 save percentage.

Noting the Golden Eagles: Charleston lost to Ohio Valley University and Bellarmine University, within the first three games of the season, but did not lose another contest. Their only other non-win result this season came on October 20, when they tied with NDC. The Golden Eagles totaled 11 shutouts in 2019. Charleston claimed the regular season MEC title for the sixth straight season and the No. 1 seed in the tournament. This season, UC beat Urbana in both matchups, outscoring them by a score of 8-1.

Noting the Blue Knights: Urbana went 7-2-1 over their final ten regular season games. UU has now reached double-digit wins in four of the last five seasons. This season, against the top three teams in the MEC (Charleston, NDC, Wesleyan), Urbana combined to go 1-4-1. Since the MEC formed in 2013, Urbana has run into Charleston in the MEC Tournament or the NCAA Division II Tournament five times, and the Golden Eagles have gotten the best of them every time.
