Series History:Â Notre Dame is 4-3 versus W.Va. Wesleyan since the two teams first matched up in 2012. The Falcons have a record of 2-4 all-time against D&E, but have not faced them since 2016.
Noting the Falcons: The last time NDC volleyball had 17 wins in a season was 2009. The Falcons finished with a record of 17-16 in that campaign. After a season long three-game losing streak, Notre Dame certainly turned it around last week with three consecutive wins. They beat Lake Erie College, Concord University and Glenville State College during the week, losing just two sets. Thanks to the big week, for the first time in program history, the volleyball program swept the Mountain East Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors. On the offensive side,
Paige Staudacher totaled 132 assists. She had 49 assists against Concord and 48 against Lake Erie, which were her third and fourth highest outputs of 2019, respectively.
Alexandra Kaeberlein took home the defensive award after she recorded 77 digs over the week. Her 31 digs against Concord was her season-high for a four-set match and set the mark for fourth most in a four-set match in program history. Staudacher is seventh in the country in assists (870) and 37th in assists per set (10.2). Kaeberlein ranks sixth in NCAA Division II, and first in the MEC, in digs (490) and 11th in the country in digs per set (5.9). As a team, NDC ranks nationally inside the top-20 in several categories. The Falcons are sixth in team digs with 1,608, eighth in assists with 1,052, ninth in total attacks at 3,305, tenth in aces with 163, 13th in kills with 1,111 and 15th in digs per set with 18.9. They rank first in the MEC in all those categories except for digs per set, where they rank second.
Kaye Dregalla leads the team with 241 kills while Staudacher has 29 aces.
Katie Richardson is at the top of the team, recording 55 blocks so far.
Career Record Watch: In the MEC history books
Alexandra Kaeberlein is currently second in career digs (2,271),
Paige Staudacher is third in career assists (3,499) and
Mary Kate McHugh is fifth in career kills (1,427). McHugh, who is fourth in the conference this season with 239 kills, ranks sixth among active leaders in DII in kills, third in attacks (4,424) and 16th in matches played (121). Kaeberlein is third among active leaders in the nation in digs, 21st with 5.07 digs per set and 12th in matches played with 124. Staudacher is 13th in the nation among active leaders in career assists.
Noting the Bobcats: West Virginia Wesleyan got off to a good start in the conference schedule, sweeping the University of Charleston and beating Glenville State. But after beating two of their first three MEC opponents, the Bobcats have dropped four straight MEC games, which includes being swept by West Liberty University and Wheeling University, at home, last week. Jenny Lundy leads the Bobcats with 130 kills, but Emily Doyle is not far behind with 123. Payton Hefner has 302 of WVWC's 601 assists this season. Doyle averages 3.53 digs per set and leads the squad with 194. Lauryn Antolock has 51 blocks on the season.
Noting the Senators: Although they are licking their wounds after being swept by nationally ranked Wheeling last Saturday, Davis and Elkins has put themselves in fourth place in the MEC standings. Joining the conference this season, the Senators have looked comfortable, winning five straight games at one point, including a 3-1 win over West Liberty. Their only losses have come against the top two teams in the standings (Wheeling, West Virginia State). Kelly Smith leads the conference in aces (33) and aces per set (0.52). Kaitlyn LaCour is at the top of the conference in attacks per set (11.2), kills per set (3.9) and points per set (4.4). As a team, the trends show that Davis & Elkins is very strong defensively. They lead the conference in blocks per set (2.5) and opposing hitting percentage, limiting teams to a .123 percentage. In the country, they rank seventh and 15th, respectively, in those categories. Kelly Smith leads the team, recording 281 digs, while Raleighanne Weaver has 62 blocks, averaging more than one per set.
