Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame had an up and down week. For just the second time since the series began in 2001, the Falcons tied with Urbana University. The Falcons then came home and put seven on the scoreboard in a shutout of West Liberty University. However, Notre Dame was impressive enough to receive votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll. The program began the season ranked No. 23 in the poll, but has not appeared in the rankings since. Currently in the MEC standings, Notre Dame is second with 19 points. Charleston is first with 21 points and West Virginia Wesleyan is third with 16. This season, Notre Dame leads the country and the MEC in corner kicks per game with eight. NDC is also at the top of the conference in shots per game with 16.8. The Falcons rank second in the MEC in several categories, including scoring offense (2.44), points per game (6.44) and team goals against (.87).
Niklas Ringdahl Bohlin and
Varis Singh Khera are both at the top of the conference in game-winning goals (2). Bohlin is also second in the conference with .56 goals per game and second in total goals with five.
Daniele De Angelis recently took over the program lead in wins with 39 and counting. He has been a model of consistency in goal and is among the active career leaders in the country in several categories. De Angelis is currently first in goalkeeper minutes (5,819.65), eighth in saves (200), eighth in save percentage (.791) and 11th in goals against average (.820).
Noting the Bobcats: West Virginia Wesleyan has bounced back nicely early this season after a trying campaign last year. In 2018, they had their worst record since joining the MEC, losing nine conference games. Just like the Falcons, the Bobcats only conference loss this season came at the hands of Charleston. The offense has struggled of late, though. Following a 4-0 win over Concord on September 25, the Bobcats have scored just one goal in each of the last three games. Over those games, WVWC has tied with West Liberty before defeating Davis & Elkins and Frostburg State. Jeremy Collins is first in the MEC in save percentage. He has 30 saves on the season, after starting all but one game so far. Six players are tied for the team lead with two goals as the team has scored 14 on the season.
Noting the Senators: This week, Davis & Elkins beat Wheeling, 1-0, giving the Senators their first winning streak of the season. That win also put them back at the .500 mark for the season, at 4-4. D&E is bouncing back from a tough season last year, winning just five games. But, the Mountain East newcomers have had plenty of success in the seven years prior to 2018. Over that time, they won, at least, seven games every year, including five double-digit win campaigns. D&E has allowed more goals (11), than they have scored this season. Victor Pires is at the top of the team in goals with three. Jens Ovreseth has three of the team's seven assists this season, along with two goals. Everton Carvalho is the goalkeeper and has a .68 save percentage with three shutouts.
Noting the Golden Eagles: After losing two of their first three games to begin the season and dropping out of the rankings, Charleston has bounced back. UC has won six straight games and is now 10th in NCAA Division II. In their eight victories, Charleston has averaged 3.9 goals per game while giving up a total of two goals, including six shutouts. However, in their two losses at the beginning of the season, they were shutout, 1-0, in games against Ohio Valley and Bellarmine. The Golden Eagles are in the top ten in NCAA Division II in multiple categories. They are third in scoring offense (3.10), shots on goal per game (8.80), shutout percentage (.700) and total points (85). The program is second in total goals (31), fifth in goals against average (.400), eighth in assists (23) and fifth in points per game (8.5). Andri Gretarsson is first in the conference in goals against average at .500. Ploutarchos Alonefti and Jesus Cabanas both lead the conference with four assists. Christos Charalambous and Freddie Tracey are both tied for second in the conference with five goals. Tracey is second in the MEC with 13 points.
