This Week: The Notre Dame College football team visits Glenville State in Week 2 on Saturday, September 8. The game at I.L & Sue Morris Stadium is scheduled for a 12 p.m. kickoff.
Records: Notre Dame College is 1-0 after defeating No. 16 Shepherd last week 35-33. Glenville State is also 1-0. The Pioneers won 17-7 against UVa-Wise.These teams are two of five MEC teams with 1-0 conference records.
Coaches Corner: Mike Jacobs is in his third year as the head coach of the NDC football program. He has an overall record of 18-5 (17-4 MEC). Eric Smith enters his second season at the helm of Glenville State in 2018. With his team's opening victory, he has a 5-7 (4-7 MEC) record.
Rankings: Notre Dame received 56 points in the September 3 AFCA Coaches' Poll, finishing just two spots outside the top 25.
Series History: Glenville State may have a 3-2 lead in the series, which dates back to 2013, but NDC head coach
Mike Jacobs has handed GSC both its losses in his first two years. A historically close series, with point differentials of four, three, eight and six in the first four years of the matchups, things opened up last season as the Falcons were able to win 35-10.
Noting the Falcons: With it's win over No. 16 Shepherd, Notre Dame caught the attention of the Mountain East Conference. The Falcons won both Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors as true freshman
Jaleel McLaughlin and true sophomore
Guam Lee pulled in the awards. McLaughlin broke an NDC record with 302 yards rushing in his debut while Lee recorded nine tackles and snagged two interceptions in the red zone. Notre Dame is looking to utilize its young talent a lot in 2018 as 12 of the teams 25 starting spots are dedicated to underclassmen, including three offensive linemen and three defensive backs. Joining McLaughlin in the backfield is redshirt-freshman
Chris Brimm at QB.
Noting the Pioneers: Similar to Notre Dame, Glenville State was able to win last week despite being out-gained in yards on the offensive end. Also like the Falcons, the Pioneers capitalized on turnovers. Of the three turnovers GSC forced, two led to scores, resulting in 10 of its 14 points. Glenville State's Brycen Lee recovered a fumble and took it 14 yards for the game's second touchdown late in the first half. It was again a fumble recovery that gave the Pioneers a possession in the fourth quarter, which resulted in a 48-yard field goal.
Breakin' Up Is Hard To Do: Or is it? The Falcon defense had 11 pass break ups last week and added three interceptions. Of the 20 incomplete passes thrown by Shepherd, 14 were disrupted by a Notre Dame player.
