Football visits Concord with hopes of staying undefeated

This Week: Notre Dame College travels to the Concord University for its second road game of the season on Saturday, September 22. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:04 p.m.

Records: Notre Dame College is 3-0 (3-0 MEC) after a 33-31 victory over West Virginia State at home last week. Concord is 1-2 (1-2 MEC) after losing its last two contests, most recently to UVa-Wise 35-20.

Coaches Corner: Mike Jacobs is in his third year as the head coach of the NDC football program. He has an overall record of 20-5 (19-4 MEC). Paul Price is also in his third year as the leader of the Concord Mountain Lions. After going 2-9 in each of his first two seasons, he has a total record of 5-20 (5-18 MEC).

Rankings: Notre Dame received 47 points in the September 17 AFCA Coaches' Poll, finishing just four spots outside the top 25.

Series History: The Falcons currently lead the Mountain Lions 3-2. After losing in its first two competitions, Notre Dame has won the last three matchups. Under the leadership of Jacobs, NDC has outgained CU 967- 599 yards, including a 469-157 yard advantage on the ground, and outscored the Mountain Lions 58-23 largely due to a 44-13 victory last year.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame has put together some very impressive offensive stats early this season. Here are just a few: Jaleel McLaughlin's has out-rushed 130 teams in NCAA Division II... His 601 rushing yards leads all levels of NCAA football... He also leads the MEC in yards per carry (8.9) and rushing touchdowns (4, tied)... Marvelle Ross currently ranks third in DII with 25 receptions and seventh with 381 receiving yards, leading the MEC in both categories... McLaughlin's 667 all-purpose yards are most in DII while Ross's 523 ranks 10th; NDC is one of just four schools with two players in the top 50 all-purpose yards rankings and the only school with two in the top 10 (New Mexico Highlands is the only other school with two players in the top 20)... Both players have also scored five touchdowns, making them two of four players in the MEC responsible for 30 or more points... Chris Brimm is one of just seven quarterbacks in DII with seven or more touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Noting the Mountain Lions: On paper, Concord looks to be a near perfect matchup for the Falcons. The Mountain Lions rank ninth in the MEC in total offense and last in total defense. While Notre Dame isn't far behind on the defensive side (10th), Concord does not appear to have NDC's kryptonite. The Falcons have given up nearly 82 percent of its yards in the air (1,213), but Concord is one of three MEC teams averaging less than 200 yards passing per game this season. On the Mountain Lions defensive end, they rank 10th in stopping the run while Notre Dame's 5.8 yards per carry leads the league. Concord has been able to take advantage of penalties as it has the second-fewest penalty yards (52.7 per game), but has the most penalty yards by opponents (128.7).

By the Numbers

3: Passes intercepted by Guam Lee. All three have been caught inside NDC's 20-yard line, with two coming in the end zone. Lee is tied with the most interceptions in the MEC while Notre Dame, as a team, is tied with the most in the league as well with five.

5: Falcons have recorded 20 or more tackles this season. All five players are in the top 16 in the MEC total tackles ranking. Urbana is the only other team with three in the top 20.

9: Takeaways earned by the Notre Dame defense. NDC has added four fumble recoveries to its five interceptions to rank ninth in NCAA DII in forced turnovers.

36: Passes defended. The Falcons have broken up 31 passes and intercepted five more. No other team in the MEC has defended more then 19 passes.
