Men's soccer travels for the first time this season, battles Wheeling Jesuit and Shepherd

This week: No. 13 Notre Dame College will go on the road for the first time this season and play Wheeling Jesuit University on September 20 at 5:30 p.m. and then travel to Shepherd on September 23 for a 1 p.m. start.

Records: The Falcons are 5-1, overall and 3-1 in the Mountain East Conference. Wheeling Jesuit is 3-1-2 (2-1 MEC) and Shepherd is 0-6 (0-4 MEC).

Coaches Corner: Carl Nolan enters his third season at the helm of the NDC men's soccer program. He currently holds a record of 26-12-3, overall. Jim Regan is entering his 35th season in charge of the Cardinals and has a record of 369-242-57. Alex Jones is in his second season as head coach of the Rams with a record of 0-23-1, 0-16 MEC.

Rankings: Notre Dame is currently 13th in the United Soccer Coaches poll.

Series History: The Falcons started their series with Wheeling Jesuit in 2005 and have put together a record of 11-2-1 and Notre Dame is 10-0 against Shepherd since 2013.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame defeated Concord on September 12 by a score of 3-0. The win ran their shutout streak to five consecutive games to start the season and six consecutive shutout games going back to last season. Nicholas Felician had an excellent game, scoring the first two goals of the game, in the 43rd and 66th minute. He also assisted on the final goal of the game, scored by Arthur Favero, for his fifth goal of the season. Favero leads the team in goals (5), points (12), shots-on-goal (13) and is tied for the lead in assists (2).Goalkeeper Daniele De Angelis recorded a season-high four saves and is now tied for first in NCAA Division II, with five shutouts. The first top-10 matchup in MEC history took place between No. 5 Notre Dame and No. 10 University of Charleston, on September 16. UC scored the first goal of the game in the 40th minute as William Clague scored his first goal of the year. The goal ended a streak of 490 scoreless minutes for the Falcons this season. The Golden Eagles scored two more goals in the second half to win, 3-0. NDC is averaging 2.50 goals-per-game and hold a 52.5-percent shot-on-goal percentage. Felician is tied for sixth in NCAA-II in game-winning goals this season, with two. The freshman from Brunswick, Ohio has three goals on five shots-on-goal, for a percentage of 83.3-percent.

Noting the Cardinals: This past week, Wheeling Jesuit went to overtime twice. Against West Virginia Wesleyan on September 12, the Cardinals snuck past the Bobcats with a goal in the second half of overtime (105th minute). McKinley Fodness scored the golden goal on a free kick to win the game for the Cardinals, 1-0. Against California University of Pa. on September 15, the Vulcans scored a goal in the first half and WJU tied the game in the 66th minute. The Cardinals took nine shots in the second half of regulation but put the ball in the net only once. Both teams combined for 11 total shots in the two scoreless overtime periods. Goalkeeper Jonathan Bosmyr had six saves. WJU is averaging 2.17 goals-per-game this season. Pedro Crespo has three goals and seven points, this season. Martin Minuzzi has scored three goals, as well, and has two game winning goals. The Cardinals have used three goalkeepers (Bosmyr, Josh Zimmerman, Tyler Sowell) who have each started two games and they have recorded 17 saves.

Noting the Rams: Shepherd has been shutout in five of their six games this season. The Rams took on West Liberty on September 12 and fell 4-0. The Hilltoppers scored three goals in the first half, with two coming from Waleed Cherif, and WLU added one more in the second half. SU's goalkeeper Jose Machado Orellana had 14 saves as West Liberty took 37 shots and 18 shots-on-goal in the contest. Against Urbana on September 16, the Rams took only one shot in a 3-0 loss. The Blue Knights took 20 shots and Jasminko Dizdarevic scored twice. Machado Orellana grabbed nine saves. He now has 49 saves on the season and leads the nation in that stat.
