No. 5 Men's soccer battles Concord and No. 10 Charleston on Mueller Field, this week

This week: No. 5 Notre Dame College has a big week ahead as they will take on Concord University on September 12 at 4 p.m. and then No. 10 University of Charleston on September 16 at 1 p.m. Both games will be played on Mueller Field.

Records: The Falcons are 4-0 to start the season with four consecutive shutouts. Concord is currently 1-1-1 and Charleston is 3-0-1. The Golden Eagles' defense has also started the campaign with four shutouts.

Coaches Corner: Carl Nolan enters his third season at the helm of the NDC men's soccer program. He currently holds a record of 25-11-3, overall. Steve Barrett is entering his 20th season as a head coach at Concord and holds a record of 64-146-18. Dan Stratford is in his second season as head coach of UC. Charleston went 21-1-2 last season and won the NCAA Division II National Championship.

Rankings: Notre Dame is currently fifth in the United Soccer Coaches poll. University of Charleston is 10th in the poll.

Series History: The Falcons are 9-0-1 since the series with Concord started in 2013 while they have an all-time record of 3-10-2 against Charleston.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame defeated both West Virginia Wesleyan College (2-0) and West Liberty University (4-0) last week. Going back to last season, the Falcons' defense has not allowed a goal in five straight games. Their four shutouts to begin a season is the longest streak of that kind since 2010 when Notre Dame did not allow a goal in their first seven games. The Falcons' Lewis Norvock was named Mountain East Conference Defensive Player of the Week after scoring a goal against West Virginia Wesleyan and playing all 90 minutes on defense against West Liberty. Last week, Arthur Favero also had two goals and an assist. Favero is now tied for 11th in the NCAA Division II with four goals on the season. Goalkeeper Daniele De Angelis is currently tied for first in the nation with 360 minutes played without allowing a goal. In the two games last week, Sam Vail was credited with two assists. Notre Dame's defense did not allow a shot on goal against West Liberty and the Hilltoppers only took four total shots.

Noting the Mountain Lions: Concord has had every possible result so far this season. They lost to King University (2-0), tied with Urbana University (1-1) and then beat Shepherd University (2-1). King U. scored both of their goals against the Mountain Lions in the first half. Both teams took 10, or more, shots in the game. Against Urbana, both teams scored one goal in the second half. UU took 10 shots in the second half and 21 in the game. Concord's goalkeeper Kyle Brown had his work cut out for him, but he recorded nine saves while allowing just one goal. Against Shepherd, CU scored both of their goals in the first half and held off the Rams in the second half. Again, the Concord defense allowed Shepherd to take 13 shots in the game. Every team that has played Concord this season has taken 12, or more, shots. Maxime Ramioulle has a game winning goal this season while Matt Henderson and Josh Sheffield each have a goal.

Noting the Golden Eagles: Charleston was shocked in their opening game of the season. After winning the NCAA Division II National Championship, Saginaw Valley State University held the Golden Eagles scoreless through 110 minutes of action on August 30. UC also took just two shots in the contest. The preseason number one team in the United Soccer Coaches Poll fell to No. 11 the next week. Charleston came back and put five goals on the scoreboard against Gannon (two goals in the first half, three in the second). The Golden Knights were held to just two shots and no shots on goal. The University of Charleston scored their only two goals against West Liberty on September 5, while the Hilltoppers were held without a shot in the contest. UC had to go to overtime for a second time in 2018 as they could not score in the first 90 minutes of play versus West Virginia Wesleyan on September 9. Alexandre Guichard scored the golden goal in the 99th minute to give Charleston a 1-0 victory. Nicolas Engelking has two goals, three assists and seven points this season. The Golden Eagles have three different players who have scored a game winning goal. Goalkeeper Alvaro Dean has played 290 minutes of his team's 389 and is tied for the lead in Division II in goal against average.
