Men's Soccer By Jacob Bunner

Men's soccer battles West Liberty on Sunday, then plays two games next week

Upcoming games: No. 15 Notre Dame College will play one non-conference home game, sandwiched by two road conference games. On October 7, they will play West Liberty University in their only game of this week. On October 9, the Falcons come home to take on Daemen College and then hit the road to play West Virginia Wesleyan College on October 14.

Records: The Falcons are 8-2, overall and 6-2 in the Mountain East Conference. West Liberty is 3-7 (3-6 MEC) while Daemen is 4-6. West Virginia Wesleyan sits at 2-7-2 (2-7 MEC).

Coaches Corner: Carl Nolan enters his third season at the helm of the NDC men's soccer program. He currently holds a record of 29-13-3, overall, and 22-8-2 in the MEC. Thomas Olivier is in his first season leading the Hilltoppers. Bobby McColl is in her third season at Daemen and has a record of 13-31. Gavin Donaldson has a record of 321-173-51 in 27 seasons at WVWC.

Rankings: Notre Dame is currently 15th in the United Soccer Coaches poll.

Series History: The Falcons are 1-0 all-time against West Liberty. The Falcons started their series with DC in 2001, but have not played them since 2010. NDC has been dominant, winning 10 of the 11 matchups. The Falcons are 8-2-1 versus West Virginia Wesleyan since 2013.

Noting the Falcons: On October 1, Guilherme Gloria Albuquerque was named MEC Offensive Player of the Week and Daniele De Angelis was named Defensive Player of the Week. Last week, Albuquerque scored the first two goals in an NDC 3-2 win over Urbana. The game was his first multi-goal game of the year. He then scored the first, and game-winning, goal in a 5-0 win over Concord. De Angelis had seven saves over the two games. After shutting out Concord on September 30, De Angelis now has seven shutouts this season, which ranks him tied for second in the nation in shutouts. Arthur Favero scored his eighth goal of the season in the victory over CU while Markus Hemioe scored his first and second goal of his collegiate career in that same contest. Favero now ranks 19th in the NCAA Division II with his eight goals and ranks 19th with 20 points. The Falcons played West Virginia Wesleyan on September 5 and West Liberty on September 9 and beat those two teams by a combined score of 6-0.

Noting the Hilltoppers: After defeating Shepherd University and West Virginia Wesleyan College in back-to-back games in mid-September, West Liberty has struggled. They had been shutout in four straight losses before they beat West Virginia Wesleyan, again, on October 4. In fact, WLU has been shutout in six of their seven losses this season. On the other hand, two of their three wins have been shutouts. Against Wheeling Jesuit on September 27, the Hilltoppers held the Cardinals to just 10 shots and two shots-on-goal in a 1-0 loss. The only goal was scored by Javier Mangado in the 74th minute. Again, when the University of Charleston came to West Liberty, the Hilltoppers did not allow a goal in the first half and only allowed UC to take three shots in that half. In the second half, the Golden Eagles took 12 shots, leading to four goals in a 4-0 Charleston win. For West Liberty this season, Waleed Cherif and Chaz Rodeheaver each have two goals while Florian Dupuis has 40 saves.

Noting the Wildcats: Daemen has lost three out of their last four games and they are 1-4 on the road. On September 26, Tyler Madeira scored both goals for Bloomsburg in a 2-0 Daemen loss. DC used two goalkeepers, Philipp Schmidt and Eithan Hahn, who combined for five saves. On September 29, the Wildcats lost to the New York Institute of Technology by a score of 3-1. Daemen is allowing two goals-per-game, this season. They have five players who are tied with five goals and four players who have one game-winning goal. Anthony Cupello and Giacomo Bacigalupo, each, have two goals, two assists and six points.

Noting the Bobcats: West Virginia Wesleyan has gone 2-2 since a tough 0-4-2 start. The Bobcats punished Shepherd with five goals in a 5-0 win on September 27. Liam Igoe, Matthew Bentley and Zach Whiting had a goal and an assist. Kazuma Takagi and Tanner Amos each had a goal while Dominic Okus had two assists. The Bobcats then fell to Wheeling Jesuit, 1-0. The lone goal came in the 61st minute. Alex Rittenhouse accounted for seven saves over the two games. Five players have two goals this season, but Matthew Bentley leads the team with six points (two goals, two assists) in just five games. Liam Igoe leads the team with two game-winning goals. Sahil Dhunnookchand and Alex Rittenhouse have split up the season in goal playing five games, each. Rittenhouse has 22 saves while Dhunnookchand has 21.
