Men's soccer prepares for MEC tournament

This week: No. 21 Notre Dame College enters the Mountain East Conference Tournament as the No. 2 seed. They will take on Wheeling Jesuit University, the three seed, on October 31. The game will begin at 1 p.m. on Mueller Field.
 
Records: The Falcons are 14-3, 11-3 in the MEC, while Wheeling Jesuit is 10-5-2 (9-5 MEC).

Coaches Corner: Carl Nolan is in his third season at the helm of the NDC men's soccer program. He currently holds a record of 35-14-3, overall, and 27-9-2 in the MEC. James Regan is currently in his 35th season as head coach of WJU. He has a record of 376-246-57.

Rankings: Notre Dame is currently 21st in the United Soccer Coaches poll and tied for third in the Atlantic Region.

Series History: The Falcons are 12-3-1 against Wheeling Jesuit since the two teams first battled in 2005. The teams split the 2018 season series, 1-1.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame went 2-0 last week, defeating Wheeling Jesuit by a score of 1-0 and Urbana University, 2-1, in overtime. Daniele De Angelis was named MEC Defensive Player of the Week after collecting five saves. He also secured his 11th shutout of the season. He is now second in NCAA Division II with that number of shutouts. Guilherme Gloria Albuquerque scored the game-winning goal against Wheeling Jesuit and scored the game-tying goal versus Urbana. David Perez Torralba put the game-winning goal into the net, beating the Blue Knights in overtime, on Sunday. Arthur Favero leads the Falcons and the MEC in points with 30, he is tied for first in the conference in goals at 11 and tied for first with eight assists. Nicholas Felician is tied for third in the MEC with four game winners. NDC is second in the MEC in goals (43), goals-per-game (2.53), goals allowed (11), goals allowed-per-game (0.65), assists (32) and points (7.06). Notre Dame's 11 shutouts are second in the conference to the University of Charleston's 15. NDC is 1-1 against WJU in the MEC tournament, playing them in 2013 and 2014.

Noting the Cardinals: Wheeling Jesuit went 1-1 last week, falling to NDC and then beating West Liberty University, 2-1, to finish the regular season. Pedro Crespo and Martin Minuzzi each scored in the second half against West Liberty, to get the comeback win. The Cardinals hit the ten win mark in a season for the first time since 2015 and have already improved their record by six victories from 2017. Martin Minuzzi is second in the conference in points (25) while he is tied for the lead in goals (11) and leads the MEC in game winning goals with five. Josh Zimmerman is sixth in the MEC with 3.33 saves-per-game. Wheeling Jesuit is third in the conference with 32 goals and 1.88 goals-per-game. They are also third in goals against with 18 this season and an average of 1.06 per contest. WJU finished the regular campaign in third with eight shutouts, behind UC and Notre Dame.

MEC Semifinal: The other matchup that will take place on Wednesday is No. 4 University of Charleston (15-0-2, 13-0-1 MEC) vs. Urbana University (8-6-3, 7-4-3 MEC) in Charleston, W.Va. at 7 p.m. If Charleston wins, the winner of the NDC-WJU matchup will travel to the Golden Eagles. If Urbana is victorious, the winner of the NDC-WJU matchup will host the Blue Knights.
