This Week: Glenville State College visits the campus of Notre Dame College as the football teams face off on Saturday, September 9 for the NDC Military Appreciation game. The Falcons will play on Mueller Field at 12 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on live radio, provided through ESPN Cleveland 1540 KNR2.
Records: Notre Dame College is 0-1 after a 54-49 loss at No. 7 Shepherd last week. Glenville State is 0-1 after a 41-29 home loss against UVa-Wise in week 1.
Coaches Corner: Mike Jacobs is in his second year as the head coach of the NDC football program. He has an overall record of 9-3 (8-3 MEC). Eric Smith is in his first season as the head coach at Glenville State. He is currently 0-1 as a head coach.
Rankings: Neither of the teams facing off in South Euclid, Ohio this weekend are ranked in the September 4 AFCA Coaches poll. Notre Dame did receive two points in the voting, however.
Series History: The Falcons trail the Pioneers 1-3 in a series dating back to 2013. NDC earned its first win against GSC last season with a 34-26 victory.
Noting the Falcons: Despite a tough loss on the road, against a top-10 opponent, Notre Dame showed what they could do on the offensive end, putting up 49 points. Offensively, the Falcons gained 389 yards on 69 plays (5.6 yards per play). The offense also did well in the redzone, converting on all five of its trips to the red zone. With all of the success on the offensive end of the ball, the Falcons struggled defensively. NDC gave up 54 points and 561 yards in week 1. The team did well against the run (86 yards; 2.7 yards per attempt), but gave up 476 yards through the air.
Noting the Pioneers: Glenville State struggled with efficiency in its first game, but did well with the snap they converted on. In the passing game, Ja'Quay Garmon only completed 16 of his 50 pass attempts, but threw for 311 yards and four touchdowns. Javon Butler also made the best of his day with three receiving touchdowns on three catches, including an 80-yard score. Cory Roberts led the Pioneers defensively with 12 tackles, but his unit gave up 485 yards.
Smith's Big Day: Senior WR,
Emmanuel Smith did it all in the first game of the season with 205 all-purpose yards. Smith scored one of the most important touchdowns of week 1 with a 90-yard kick off return. He caught 14 passes for 98 yards while gaining 17 yards on two rushing attempts. His 14 catches is third most in a single game in NDC history.
