This week: Following a week long hiatus, Notre Dame College men's soccer will play Urbana University at home on September 27 at 4 p.m. They will then travel to Shepherdstown, W.Va. to take on Shepherd University at 1 p.m. on September 30.
Records: The Falcons currently hold a record of 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Mountain East Conference. Urbana is also 4-3 with a 3-1 MEC record. Shepherd is 0-7-1, 0-3 MEC.
Coaches Corner: Carl Nolan is in his second season as head coach of Notre Dame. He went 10-5-2, 8-2-2 MEC in 2016. His current coaching record stands at 14-8-2, 10-4-2 MEC. Nick Roberts is in his 10th season as the head coach of the Blue Knights. He was named MEC Coach of the Year for the 2016 campaign after the team went 14-5-1, 8-1-1 MEC. Alex Jones took over the soccer program this season after serving as an assistant coach in 2016. Jones is still searching for his first win as a head coach and has a record of 0-7-1, 0-3.
Rankings: None of these teams are ranked in the United Soccer Coaches poll.
Series History: NDC is 11-5-1 against Urbana in a series that started in 2001, the program's first season in existence. The Falcons are 8-0 against Shepherd since they first played them in 2013.
Noting the Falcons: Last week, Notre Dame's only game came against the University of Charleston, the top ranked team in Division II. In the 3-0 loss to the Golden Eagles, all three goals were scored in the first half as UC took nine shots before halftime. The first two goals came before the 20th minute off the feet of Thomas Vancaeyezeele and Will Roberts. Ettore Ballestracci scored the final goal of the game with less than two minutes to play before halftime. Reece Daly and freshman
Jan Walker. NDC's only goal in the past two weeks came from David Torralba in a 1-0 victory over Concord on September 17. Senior
Leonardo Paiva still leads the team with five goals, 11 points and 18 shots on goal.
Noting the Blue Knights: Urbana went 1-1 in the past week, falling to Seton Hill 3-0, on the road, and then beating Concord University 5-4 at home. Against the Griffins on September 19, the Blue Knights had 15 shots and six shots on goal but could not convert a goal. On the other hand, Seton Hill's three shots on goal, all found their way into the back of the net. Urbana has struggled against three non-conference opponents so far this season, falling to Ohio Dominican University (3-2), Seton Hill and squeaking past Gannon with an overtime win (3-2). In a high scoring match against Concord on September 24, Urbana was leading at the half by a score of 2-1. They allowed three goals to the Mountain Lions in the second half but pulled out the win in overtime with a header by Harry Tamplin in the 96th minute. Tamplin was named MEC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring two goals and recording four points against Concord, his first goals and points of the season. Antoine Ravera leads the team with six goals, 13 points and 26 shots.
Noting the Rams: Shepherd is still looking for their first victory of the season. Their lone tie came in the first road game of the season, a 2-2 final score against Pitt-Johnstown on September 2. Since their 5-3 loss to Lock Haven on September 4, the Rams have not scored more than one goal in any other game. Along with being shut out five times, they have not score a goal in the last 339 minutes of action, going into their game against Concord on September 27. In two non-conference games in the past week, Shepherd lost to East Stroudsburg University 6-0, on September 19, and Daemen College 4-0, on September 25. East Stroudsburg scored five goals in the first half of their game while Daemen scored four goals in the first half against Shepherd. Alejandro Oliart leads the team with three goals and six points.
