This week: Notre Dame College will play one game this week, as they travel to Charleston, W.Va. to take on the University of Charleston at 4 p.m. on September 20.
Records: The Falcons enter the week with a record of 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Mountain East Conference. The Golden Eagles are 6-0 this season, 3-0 MEC.
Coaches Corner: Carl Nolan is in his second season as head coach of Notre Dame. He went 10-5-2, 8-2-2 MEC in 2016. Dan Stratford is in his first season as head coach of Charleston. He spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach with the program.
Rankings: Charleston is ranked first in Division II according to the United Soccer Coaches. Notre Dame received votes in the poll released on September 12.
Series History: NDC is 3-8-1 against Charleston since they first played each other in 2012. In 2016, the Falcons beat UC 5-3 at home but finished in a 1-1 tie, on the road, in Charleston.
Noting the Falcons: In the United Soccer Coaches poll that came out on September 12, Notre Dame received votes in NCAA Division II. NDC currently sits in fifth place in the Atlantic Regional rankings. NDC lost to No. 22 West Virginia Wesleyan 1-0 as defending MEC Offensive Player of the Week, Juwon Akintunde scored the only goal of the game in the ninth minute. The Bobcats goalkeeper Alessandro Armenia made eight saves. The Falcons bounced back with a 1-0 win over Concord University on September 17.
David Torralba Perez was able to put his first goal of the season into the net in the 28th minute with
Lewis Norvock and
Reece Daly both credited with the assist. In the game, NDC did not allow the Mountain Lions to take a shot throughout the entire game. The Falcons had many opportunities, taking 20 shots in the game, and 10 of them were shots on goal. Over the past week, the Falcons defense has been excellent, as goalkeeper
Daniele De Angelis has made two saves and has only seen three shots on goal over the past week.
Leonardo Paiva leads the team in goals (5), points (11), shots (34) and shots on goal (18).
Reece Daly leads the team in assists with two.
Noting the Golden Eagles: The University of Charleston was ranked first in Division II by the United Soccer Coaches Poll, once again. The Golden Eagles have now spent nine weeks ranked No. 1 since 2014. They are also ranked first in the Atlantic Region and were picked to finish first in the Mountain East Conference preseason poll, just in front of Notre Dame College, in second place. UC beat Wheeling Jesuit University and Shepherd University last week to remain undefeated on the season. In their 2-1 win over Wheeling Jesuit on September 14, Patrick Guier scored the first goal and Williams N'Dah scored the second goal in the 89th minute with header off of a corner kick. Charleston took 29 shots in the contest including 17 in the second half. Wheeling Jesuit's only shot on goal produced a goal, and they only took three shots in the game. UC and Shepherd went into halftime in a scoreless tie on September 17. The Golden Eagles got a goal from Thomas Vancaeyezeele with a header off of a corner in the 53rd minute and Gabriel Cabral scored the second goal of the 2-0 victory, in the 70th minute. Shepherd was limited to three shots in the game. The contest against NDC represents the first of four consecutive home contests for Charleston. Williams N'Dah was named MEC Defensive Player of the Week and Kieran Bywater was given the nod for MEC Offensive Player of the Week. Patrick Guier leads the team in points (7) and shots (11). Guier and Ettore Ballestracci both have three goals while Kieran Bywater and Armando Tikvic have three assists.
Defense!: Notre Dame and Charleston each played two games and combined to allow only 15 total goals and four shots on goal.
