NDC men's soccer plays two games in conference; comes home Sunday

This week: Notre Dame College will play take on two Mountain East Conference opponents this week as they go against West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, W.Va. on September 14 at 6 p.m. before coming back home to take on Concord University at 1 p.m. on September 17.

Records: The Falcons are 3-1, West Virginia Wesleyan comes into the week with a record of 3-0-1 and Concord is 0-3-1.

Coaches Corner: The Notre Dame College men's soccer coach Carl Nolan is in his second season as head coach. He holds a record of 13-6-2, 9-2-2 MEC since 2016. Gavin Donaldson is the head coach for WVWC and is entering his 26th season with a record of 303-152-46 in Buckhannon. Steve Barrett has been the coach of Concord for 14 seasons. He was head coach from 1999-2002 when the program was discontinued and then came back in 2008 when Concord reinstated men's soccer. He holds an overall record of 60-139-17 with Concord.

Rankings: None of the teams were ranked in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll.

Series History: The Falcons have had a lot of success against these teams as they hold an all-time record of 6-1-1 against the Bobcats since the series stated in 2013 and are 7-0-1 against the Mountain Lions. Last season, the Falcons won 1-0 over West Virginia Wesleyan at home but lost 2-1 on the road and NDC beat Concord at home 6-0, but tied 1-1 on the road.

Noting the Falcons: Following a loss to No. 20 Mercyhurst on the road, Notre Dame bounced back by holding Wheeling Jesuit scoreless in a 1-0 victory at home on September 6. Reymar Klochko was able to score the only goal for NDC with an assist by David Torralba. The rest of the way, Notre Dame's defense stepped up, allowing just two shots in the first half and four shots by the Cardinals in the second half. The Falcons then went back on the road to take on California University of Pennsylvania on September 10 and rolled to a 6-1 win. Leonardo Paiva had a hat trick and three other Falcons scored their first goal of the season. Paiva has scored five goals and has 11 points on the season. This year, Notre Dame is scoring 2.75 goals per game and allowing .75 goals per game. NDC was voted to finish second in the MEC preseason poll.

Noting the Bobcats: Along with shutting out three of their first four opponents, WVWC defeated Shepherd University, 9-0 on September 10. Their lone tie came against Shippensburg University, 2-2, on September 5. In four games, the Bobcats have outscored their opponents, 18-2. Senior Juwon Akintunde was named MEC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance last week. Akintunde was able to score a goal against Urbana and Shippensburg and put together a hat trick against Shepherd. He has six goals and 12 points this season. As a team, West Virginia Wesleyan is scoring 4.5 goals per game while allowing .47 goals per game. The Bobcats were picked to finish fourth in the MEC Preseason poll.

Noting the Mountain Lions: Concord was shutout in their first two losses, but also tied with Shippensburg, 2-2 on September 2. Against Bluefield College, the Mountain Lions lost 2-1. They started their season with a home contest but then went on the road for five consecutive games, a road trip that they will wrap up when they come to South Euclid. The Mountain Lions play 11 of their first 13 games on the road. CU has not led a game at any point this season and has been outscored 9-3 so far in 2017. Three different players have scored a goal for the Mountain Lions but Sam Ashton leads the team with two points and seven shots on the season. Concord was picked to finish sixth in the MEC Preseason poll.
