The Falcons Lose Opening Series to Indianapolis

Notre Dame has a two run lead disappear in the eighth inning of the loss

Box Score
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Notre Dame Falcons were defeated by the No. 22 University of Indianapolis Greyhounds by a final score of 9-7, on Sunday afternoon.

Notre Dame (1-2) loses their first series of the season. Indianapolis (4-2) has gotten off to a hot start in 2017 by winning their first two series on their schedule.

The Greyhounds struck first in the second inning with two hits, including a triple by Blake Richardson which scored a run, giving them a 1-0 lead. Brendan Dudas then flied out to right field and Richardson tried to tag up and score. However, Notre Dame's Adam Purdy threw him out at home, saving a run.

Notre Dame then scored in the third inning when Austin Barnhart hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Steve Grober. NDC was unable to hold the tie in the bottom of the third, when the Greyhounds took the lead back with back-to-back singles, making the score 2-1.

The fourth inning was the break out inning for offense as the Falcons collected four runs on five hits to give themselves a 5-2 advantage. Purdy had an RBI double and Grober plated Purdy with a single to right field. Later in the inning, with runners on second and third, TJ Lett hit a double down the left field line, scoring two more runs.

NDC would grab two more runs in the fifth before getting silenced the rest of the way, only collecting two hits in the last four innings.

Indianapolis, on the other hand, came right back and answered with 3 runs of their own in the fourth inning as Dudas hit a bunt single and moved to second base on a throwing error by the Falcons starting pitcher, Tyler Gault. A groundout and a single would give the Greyhounds their next two runs to tie the game at 5.

Indianapolis was able to complete their comeback with four more runs, on six hits, in the eighth inning. The back breaker was a one-out, two-run single by Storm Joop, which put UIndy up 8-7.

The Falcons did have a chance at the end of the game to win with two men on base in the top of the ninth inning, however, a strike out ended the game.

Three Falcons had a multi-hit game. Lett went 2-4 with two RBI.  In the series, Lett went 9-15 with 12 RBI and four multi-base hits. Gault started for Notre Dame and went four innings, allowing five runs. Kenny Pierson (1-1) was saddled with the loss after he went 1.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits. Notre Dame used four pitchers in the game. The Falcons had four errors defensively, and stranded nine men on base, on the offensive side.

Nick Miller, Richardson and Devon Hensley had three hits, each. The Greyhounds used five pitchers. Reid Werner started and went four innings, giving up five runs. Chris Boettcher (1-1) earned the win as he got two outs and did not give up a hit. Dylan Stutsman (3) got the save as he worked a scoreless inning of relief.
