AVON, Ohio – The bats were rolling in game two to ensure a series split for Notre Dame College hosting West Liberty University on Sunday afternoon inside Mercy Health Stadium. The Falcons defeated the Hilltoppers 12-10, avenging NDC's 5-2 defeat in game one. Senior
Damion Legaspe powered Notre Dame on the day with a home run and four RBI.
West Liberty opened the scoring during the top of the second inning, with two runs on two hits to lead 2-0. The Hilltoppers moved in front 4-0 with two more runs in the top of the fifth inning.
During the home half of the sixth inning, Legaspe got Notre Dame on the board with a two-run home run to left center field (4-2).
Despite six quality innings by NDC starting pitcher
Grant Meyer, allowing four runs on seven hits to go with two strikeouts and two walks, the Falcons fell to the Hilltoppers 5-2 in game one.
Legaspe (2-for-3) and
Devon Morris (2-for-2) paced Notre Dame offensively in game one with a pair of hits.
In game two, the scoring started right away as WLU tallied a run in the top of the first inning. NDC responded immediately during the home half of the frame with five runs on five hits to lead 5-1. Morris began the inning with a single to right field before stealing second base. Next, Gomes doubled in Morris for an RBI with a ball that bounced over the right field wall (ground-rule, 1-1). After
Carson Petrecca drew a walk,
Jacob Barker roped an RBI single to left field (2-1). Two batters later, Legaspe stroked another RBI single to left field (3-1). In the next at bat,
Jackson Smetak laced an RBI double down the left field line to move the score to 4-1 Falcons. Rounding out the inning,
Hudson Wesney produced a sacrifice fly with Legaspe's heads-up base running (5-1).
West Liberty answered the call with three runs on two hits during the top of the second inning, pulling within a run (5-4).
Notre Dame's bats stayed hot into the bottom of the second inning as six runs were produced on four hits to lead 11-4. First, Morris walked to lead-off the frame, before advancing to second on a wild pitch. With one out in the inning, Petrecca jolted an RBI double to the left center wall (6-4). After a WLU pitching change, Barker doubled to left field, trading places with Petrecca and grabbing an RBI (7-4). After
Alexander Jones singled to right field and stole second base, Legaspe produced a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing in Barker (8-4). Next,
Hudson Wesney reached on an error by the third baseman, allowing Jones to cross home plate (9-4). Following a Hilltopper wild pitch which scored Smetak (10-4),
Dylan Wimbs generated an RBI single to left field (11-4).
NDC starting pitcher
Matthew Brown settled in after the first two frames, allowing just three hits over his final three innings of work. In total, the junior pitched five innings, allowing six runs on six hits to go with one strikeout en route to the victory.
During the bottom of the fourth inning, Smetak stayed consistent with another RBI double into the right field corner, plating Jones who drew a lead-off walk (12-4).
After West Liberty clawed their way back into the contest at 12-10,
Nate Miller closed the game with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, to pick up the save.
Both Barker (2-for-4) and Smetak (2-for-3) tallied multiple hits and multiple RBI (2) in the game. Legaspe also picked up a pair of RBI, seven different Falcons registered an RBI in the contest.
The Notre Dame College baseball team will be back in action on Thursday Apr. 25, with a non-conference home game against Malone beginning at 1 p.m.
