Game Recap: Baseball |

Anservitz and Brammer go the distance during a Saturday split with West Liberty

AVON, Ohio – There was no shortage of starting pitching on Saturday afternoon inside Mercy Health Stadium, as both games featured a pair of complete games on each side. Notre Dame's Johnny Anservitz earned the Falcons the victory in game one over West Liberty 3-1. The redshirt senior twirled 7.0 innings, allowing one run on six hits, while striking out nine and walking one. In game two, Danny Brammer dealt for eight innings en route to the complete game. Despite NDC falling 3-2, Brammer battled for 8.0 innings, allowing three runs on 13 hits, to go with two strikeouts and zero walks allowed.

The Falcons started the scoring in game one, as Damion Legaspe drew a lead-off walk before coming around to score on a wild pitch (1-0). First, Devon Minney executed a perfect sacrifice bunt, before Carson Petrecca moved Legaspe over to third on a single through the right side.

Petrecca doubled the NDC edge during the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single through the left side (2-0). First, Legaspe poked a lead-off single up the middle, followed by another sacrifice bunt from Minney. Two batter later, Petrecca powered the two-out RBI single through the left side.

Notre Dame added an insurance run during the bottom of the sixth inning. First, Aaron Miranda beat out a lead-off single to the shortstop, followed by a Jacob Barker walk. Next, Alexander Jones laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up 90 feet, however a Hilltopper throwing error allowed the Falcons to tally another run (3-0).

WLU grabbed a run during the top of the seventh inning, but Anservitz and the Falcons closed out game one, grabbing the victory 3-1.

Miranda paced the Falcons with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate.

In game two, Notre Dame jumped on the scoreboard first with two runs on three hits during the home half of the second inning. With one away, Barker doubled down the left field line, before advancing to third base on a wild pitch. Next, Jones doubled to right center field, scoring Barker and moving NDC in front 1-0. Following a WLU error, Jackson Smetak generated an RBI single through the right side to gift the Falcons a 2-0 lead.

During the top of the fifth inning, West Liberty tied the contest at 2-2 with a pair of runs on three hits.

The two sides jostled back-and-forth into extra innings where WLU scored one run on two hits during the top half of the frame, claiming the victory 3-2.

Both Caden Gomes (2-for-4) and Jones (2-for-3) picked up multiple hits in game two, as Jones and Smetak drove home the runs to fuel NDC on offense.

Brammer's zero walks allowed are a season-best for the right-hander and for the NDC pitching staff, including the fewest walks allowed since surrendering zero free passes against Fairmont State on Apr. 14 of last season.

The Notre Dame College baseball team will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday Apr. 21 to complete the four-game set with West Liberty University at Mercy Health Stadium. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. with a doubleheader set for the afternoon.
