Football finishes home schedule against UVa-Wise

This Week: Notre Dame College football host UVa.-Wise tomorrow, November 4. Kickoff on Mueller Field is scheduled for 12 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on live radio through ESPN Cleveland 1540 KNR2.

Records: Notre Dame College is 7-2 after a 17-12 victory at Charleston last week. UVa.-Wise is 5-4 (4-4 MEC) after a 65-0 win at the Virginia University of Lynchburg.

Coaches Corner: Mike Jacobs is in his second year as the head coach of the NDC football program. He has an overall record of 16-4 (15-4 MEC). Dane Damron is also in his second season at UVa.-Wise. Damron is 11-9 (9-9 MEC).

Rankings: Notre Dame received one point in the October 30 AFCA Coaches Poll. UVa.-Wise did not receive any votes.

Series History: The Falcons lead the Cavaliers 4-0 in a series dating back to 2013. Last season, NDC won 35-29 in week two.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame took a 14-3 lead into halftime against Charleston last week, but were outscored 9-3 in the second half. The Falcons have used their first half leads to their advantage this season as they are 7-0 when leading at halftime, but their offense has struggled in the second half of close games, especially in the fourth quarter. Apart from week one at Shepherd, NDC has only scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter this season. Over that span (eight games) the Falcons have scored just 26 points in the final 15 minutes (3.25 average). Where NDC does shine, is in the second quarter. The Falcons have scored 112 points in quarter two compared to 47 in the first, 87 in the third and 47 in the fourth. During the second quarter, Notre Dame also has converted on 45.9 percent of third downs compared to 40 percent in the first, 30.3 in the third and 40.5 in the fourth.

Noting the Cavaliers: UVa.-Wise is one win away from its second-consecutive winning season. Head coach Dane Damron led the Cavaliers to their first winning season since 2009 last year, but his team will have to beat one of the top two teams in the MEC to do it again as they play Shepherd next week. The Cavaliers rank last in the MEC in turnover margin (-10) despite ranking fourth in turnovers caused (17). Also an area where the defense does well, but the offense struggles in is sacks. UVa.-Wise has sacked the opposing quarter back 27 times this season. The only team to do it more is Urbana with 29. But the Cavaliers also give up a lot of sacks, ranking last in the conference with 31 sacks against.

Rushing streak snapped: Prior to last week's game at Charleston, NDC had scored a rushing touchdown in every game this season. Despite Brian Walkers's 107 yards, the team was unable to reach pay dirt on the ground. The Falcons have scored 20 total rushing TDs in 2017.

By the Numbers

2: Forced fumbles by Claudy Mathieu last week. Mathieu tied the school record for most forced fumbles in a single game and most forced fumbles in a single season (3). Mathieu had 14 tackles, five TFL and three sacks to earn MEC Defensive Player of the Week.

9: Tackles recorded by sophomore Curtis Collins. After recording just three tackles in eight games last season, Collins ranks fourth on the team this year with 41 total tackles. He has also recorded two tackles for a loss while breaking up five passes and an interception.

80: Percent of field goals made by redshirt freshman Tanner Harding. Harding has made eight of his 10 attempts this season. His eight makes is third most in a single season and the previous record for field goal percentage in a season is 77.8.
