Football plays non-conference game to finish regular season

This Week: Notre Dame College football travels to the University of Indianapolis tomorrow, November 11. Kickoff in Key Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on live radio through ESPN Cleveland 1540 KNR2 and live video via UIndy.

Records: Notre Dame College is 8-2 after a 31-28 victory against UVa.-Wise last week at home. Indianapolis is 10-0 after a 43-34 win against Missouri S&T.

Coaches Corner: Mike Jacobs is in his second year as the head coach of the NDC football program. He has an overall record of 17-4 (16-4 MEC). Three-time GLVC Coach of the Year, Bob Bartolomeo is in his eighth season at the helm of the football program at Indianapolis. Bartolomeo was the head coach at Butler in 1990 and 1991. Over his 10 years as a head coach, he is 82-30-1 (68-23 at UIndy).

Rankings: Indianapolis was ranked No. 6 in the November 6 AFCA Coaches Poll. Notre Dame received four points.

Series History: This is the first matchup between the two programs.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame secured a second-place finish in the Mountain East Conference last week with a win against UVa.-Wise. This is the best finish for NDC since the league formed in 2013. The Falcons rank 15th in the NCAA Division II in third-down (30%) and fourth-down conversions (26%) allowed. NDC has only allowed 48 conversions on 163 of third- and fourth-down attempts. Notre Dame may face its toughest challenge in this area this week as UIndy ranks 13th in third-down conversions (45.9%).

Noting the Greyhounds: Indianapolis jumped up in the rankings after its week one upset against No. 2 Grand Valley State. It's been a steady climb since then as the Greyhounds have peaked at No. 5 twice this season. UIndy leads all of NCAA Division II in passing efficiency (188.19). Starting quarterback Jake Purichia has completed 70 percent of his passes this season. Through 10 games, Purichia has totaled 2,232 yards and 23 touchdowns to just two interceptions. The junior, and Indianapolis native, has avoided taking hits this season as UIndy has only allowed five sacks this season.

Do the Mathieu: Senior defensive end Claudy Mathieu already holds the career records at NDC for tackles for a loss (43.5) and sacks (26), but he is on the verge of two single-season records in the same category. The single-season records at Notre Dame are 15.5 tackles for a loss and 10 sacks. Currently, Mathieu has 14.5 tackles for a loss and 8.5 sacks. The Philadelphia native has also tied the single-season record for forced fumbles with three.

Non-Conference History: Since joining the MEC in 2013, the Falcons have a 2-3 record against non-conference opponents. Head coach Mike Jacobs is 1-0 against non-MEC teams.

By the Numbers

3: Punts inside the 20-yard line from senior Anton Vrebac last week. One punt also was fair caught on the 21. Vrebac punted five times for a 36.6-yard average and ran for 39 yards on a fake punt to earn MEC Special Teams Player of the Week.

9: Passes defended by freshman defensive back Tavon Hooks this season. In last week's game against UVa.-Wise, Hooks recorded four pass breakups and one interception along with five tackles and one TFL.

12: Tackles recorded by Shaun Jones Jr. last week. Jones's standout performance comes just one week after Claudy Mathieu's 14-tackle game. Jeffery Thomas, who had 10 tackles against West Liberty joins these players as the only current Flacons to have a double-digit tackle performance.
