Men's Soccer By Jacob Bunner

NDC men's soccer plays two games this week, including the No. 1 team in the Nation

This week: Notre Dame College will face a few tough Mountain East Conference teams this week as they face the No. 1 University of Charleston, at home, on October 5 at 4 p.m. The Falcons will take on Wheeling Jesuit University, on the road, on October 8 at 4:30 p.m.

Records: The Falcons currently hold a record of 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the Mountain East Conference. Charleston is currently 10-0 this season and 6-0 in the MEC. The Cardinals are 3-6-1, overall, and 1-5 MEC.

Coaches Corner: Carl Nolan is in his second season as head coach of Notre Dame. His current coaching record stands at 16-8-2, 12-4-2 MEC. Dan Stratford is in his first season as head coach of Charleston, with a record of 10-0, 6-0 MEC. James Regan is in his 35th season as the head coach of Wheeling Jesuit. His current record at WJU is 369-247-56.

Rankings: Charleston is the top ranked team in the United Soccer Coaches poll.

Series History: The Falcons are 3-9-1 against Charleston since 2012 and 10-2-1 when going against Wheeling Jesuit all-time since 2005. The Falcons have already played both of these teams this season as they lost to UC 3-0 on September 20 but beat WJU 1-0 on September 6.

Noting the Falcons: In the past week, Notre Dame has played well and picked up a 1-0 victory over Urbana University on September 27 and then beat Shepherd University 3-1 on September 30. In the win over Urbana, the Falcons and Blue Knights played a tightly contested first half on Mueller Field before Leonardo Paiva had the game winning goal in the 71st minute. On the road against Shepherd, NDC opened up the scoring as Sam Morgan headed the ball in for the first goal of the game in the 29th minute. Mats Jota had the second goal of the game, two minutes into the second half and Leonardo Paiva scored the final goal of the game in the 84th minute. The Rams converted on their only shot on goal as Justin Daniels put the ball in the back of the net in the 76th minute. SU was held to just two shots in the entire game. Lewis Norvock had two assists for Notre Dame in the game. Leonardo Paiva was named Mountain East Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his performances. Paiva still leads the team with seven goals, 15 points, 25 shots on goal and two game winning goals.

Noting the Golden Eagles: Charleston is ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II. UC kept their record perfect this past week, taking down West Virginia Wesleyan College 5-3 on September 27 and Urbana University by a score of 2-0 on September 30. When Charleston travels to South Euclid, it will be there first road trip since September 17. West Virginia Wesleyan gave the Golden Eagles one of their toughest test of the season. Charleston had only given up two goals in 2017 before playing the Bobcats, and had not given up more than one goal in a game. David Achaerandio (26'), Patrick Guier (30') and Robert Lapert (44') each had a goal for the Golden Eagles in the first half, putting UC ahead 3-1 at the intermission. The Bobcats scored on their only shot in the first half. Within 16 minutes in the second half, WVWC scored two goals to tie the game at 3, representing the latest that UC was locked in a tied game since their 2-1 win over Wheeling Jesuit on September 14. However, Guier scored in the game winning goal in the 87th minute and Gabriel Cabral scored another goal in the 89th minute. The Golden Eagles cruised past Urbana with a goal in the 10th minute by Will Roberts and in the 84th minute by Armando Tikvic. The game did include nine yellow cards. Will Roberts and Patrick Guier lead the team with five goals and Kieran Bywater leads the team with eight assists. Roberts also has 12 points.

Noting the Cardinals: Wheeling Jesuit and Concord University could not score until the 92nd minute on September 30. In overtime, Moulay Hassani scored the only goal of the game for the Mountain Lions, on the road. On October 3, the Cardinals were able to keep Shepherd University winless, as they beat the Rams 5-0. The two goals for Wheeling Jesuit in the first half came early. Owain Hawkins scored in the 6th minute and Micah Tatebe put a ball into the net in the 7th minute. Matt Vogt scored two goals in the second half and Carlos Molina scored the final goal of the game. Jordan Simpson had two assists. The Cardinals took 18 shots. Matt Vogt leads the team with three goals, six points and is tied for the team lead with seven shots on goal. Six Cardinals have scored one goal this season.
