Coaches Corner: Mike Jacobs is in his second year as the head coach of the NDC football program. He has an overall record of 15-4 (14-4 MEC). Pat Kirkland is in his seventh season at the helm of the Charleston team. Kirkland has amassed a record of 44-30 (28-18 MEC) during his tenure.
Rankings: Notre Dame received one point in the October 23 AFCA Coaches Poll. Charleston did not receive any votes. The Falcons were ranked No. 8 in the first Super Region One rankings. The top seven ranked teams make the NCAA Division II Playoffs.
Series History: The Golden Eagles lead the Falcons 3-1 in a series dating back to 2013. NDC earned its first win against Charleston last season with a 44-17 season-opening victory.
Malik Grove scored a total of four touchdowns in that meeting (three passing, one rushing).
Last Week: NDC suffered its second loss of the season last week after going down 14-13 against West Virginia Wesleyan due to a blocked extra point. The Bobcats scored on the final play after a fumble on a Hail Mary attempt.
Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame had a season-low 300 yards of total offense in last week's loss. It was just the third time this season the Falcons had been held under 400 yards. NDC hit the double-digit mark in penalties for the second time this season against WVWC. With 10 penalties, the Falcons gave up 78 yards and four first downs. After being the least penalized team in 2016, Notre Dame currently ranks sixth in the MEC with 76.6 penalty yards per game.
Noting the Golden Eagles: Charleston's starting quarterback Mason Olszewski doesn't pass the ball often, but he is very accurate when he does. Olszewski has the second-best pass efficiency rating in the MEC this year (141.8) and the highest completion percentage (71.5) in the conference. The junior has only attempted 106 passes this season, however. Olszewski is also the Golden Eagles leading rusher with 469 yards. After losing three straight games, UC is now on a two-game winning streak. Over the last two weeks Charleston has outgained its opponents 773 yards to 414.
