Notre Dame holds on to beat Concord after early goal

Box Score ATHENS, W.Va. – On Thursday afternoon, Notre Dame College grabbed another road win as they beat Concord University by a score of 1-0 after senior Leonardo Paiva scored a goal in the 13th minute.

The Falcons (8-4, 6-3 MEC) have beaten Concord twice this season and each time the Falcons won by a score of 1-0. NDC has won four of their last five games. The Mountain Lions (2-10-1, 2-6) have lost three games in a row and have fallen in five of their last seven games.

The Falcons again started the game aggressively, as Paiva took a shot that hit the post in the second minute of the game. He also took a shot in the seventh minute that went over the goal and sophomore Mats Jota launched an attempt in the 10th minute that was saved by Concord goalkeeper Kyle Brown.

Notre Dame grabbed the lead, a lead they would not surrender, in the 13th minute of the game as Paiva put in a shot that deflected off of Brown and rolled over to the Falcons' forward for the score, his ninth of the season. Senior Reymar Klochko was credited with his second assist of the year.

"We played quite direct today due to the surface," head coach Carl Nolan said. "It paid off with some early chances and obviously led to Leo's goal."

NDC did have several chances near the goal throughout the first half, especially late. Both freshman Sam Morgan and Paiva had a shot on goal in the 43rd minute and the 44th minute, respectively.

When the second half started, Concord was trying their hardest to tie the game. Throughout the stanza, the Mountain Lions put up 16 shots. Between the 66th and the 69th minute, Concord took three shots with two of them being wide and one being blocked. In the 71st minute, Yacouba Traore had a shot blocked and Pedro Bassin's shot went high.

"Concord had to come out and play in a more attacking manner in the second, and we dealt with it quite well most of the time," Nolan mentioned. "We restricted to long range shots and crosses. We also had our own chances to extend the lead and were unlucky not to."

Despite the onslaught from Concord in the half, the Falcons sophomore goalkeeper Daniele De Angelis did not allow a goal. He ended the game with five saves.
Paiva took six shots on goal for Notre Dame. Freshman Markus Thorberg, Jota and Morgan each had a shot on goal.

Traore led the Mountain Lions as he recorded six shots and three shots on goal. Bassin added four shots. Brown had eight saves, but allowed the goal.
The Falcons will come back home to play Salem International University on Mueller Field on October 15. The game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
