SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Sunday afternoon at Mueller Field marked a non-conference battle between the visiting Gannon University Golden Knights and the host Notre Dame College Falcons. After defeating Gannon each of the last three seasons, the Falcons fell in overtime, falling to the Golden Knights, 3-2.
Physical play was the theme of the game for both sides as the Falcons and Golden Knights battled for positioning early and often. However, it was the Falcons who struck first.
In the 17th minute, 2015 CCA All-American
Leonardo Paiva scored his second goal of the season, sniping a shot under the cross bar from 10 yards out with an assist from Giouli Bellei.
The Falcons continued to maintain their 1-0 lead over the course of the next few minutes, but ran into trouble in the 32nd minute as a cluster in front of the NDC net resulted in an accidental own goal, tying the game at 1-1.
The score remained tied 1-1 going into the halftime intermission.
While the shot totals for the game were relatively even, it was the Falcons who came out in the second half with an aggressive offensive mindset.
In the 61st minute,
Reece Daly sniped a shot from 18 yards out to the lower left corner, scoring the go-ahead goal for the Falcons with an assist from
Joao Pedro Ribas de Oliveira. Daly's goal was his first of the season, and gave the Falcons a 2-1 lead early in the second half.
Notre Dame looked to build upon its 2-1 lead, but couldn't convert on offensive chances to distance themselves from the Golden Knights.
With 20 minutes remaining in regulation, Gannon scored what would have been the equalizing goal but an offsides call nullified the goal, keeping the Falcons ahead 2-1.
As the second half progressed, numerous yellow cards were handed out to both sides, but the Falcons continued to maintain their 2-1 lead.
With just minutes remaining in regulation, a bevy of yellow cards were issued, causing a stoppage of play. Following the stoppage, the Golden Knights attempted a free kick and converted a header goal by Sergio Kobowane, tying the score at 2-2 in the 88th minute to eventually force overtime.
In overtime, the visiting Golden Knights scored the sudden death goal in the 100th minute to escape with the narrow 3-2 victory.
With the loss, the Falcons fall to 0-2 on the season. NDC will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 6 on the road against Shepherd University in a battle of Mountain East Conference foes.
Game time is scheduled for a 2:30 pm start on Tuesday.
