SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame College women's soccer team lost its first game of the 2016 season on Sunday, falling 1-0 to the visiting Charleston Golden Eagles.
The Falcons (4-1-2 overall, 3-1-2 Mountain East) struggled to create offensive opportunities, attempting just four shots in the first half while the Golden Eagles attempted 11 of their own. One of those 11 shots from UC turned into an early goal as the Golden Eagles scored a 7th minute goal to take the early 1-0 lead over Notre Dame.
Sam Shoemaker, the
reigning Mountain East Conference Defensive Player of the Week, played superb in net for the Falcons as she made six saves in the first half alone.
However, the Falcons trailed at halftime by a narrow deficit of 1-0.
Shoemaker continued her strong play in the second half, making two more saves for a total of eight in the game.Â
After attempting just four shots in the first half, NDC outshot UC by a 10-6 margin in the second half, upping the offensive tempo. However, despite impressive goalkeeping from Shoemaker and a renewed offensive approach, the Falcons offense couldn't break through with an equalizing goal, falling by a final score of 1-0.
With the loss, the Falcons drop to 4-1-2 on the season, including a 3-1-2 mark in MEC play.
The Falcons return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 28 on the road against the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons in another MEC showdown. Game time is scheduled for 7 pm.
