Paiva's hat trick leads men's soccer to 4-1 win over Urbana

Box Score
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame College men's soccer team cruised to a 4-1 win over the visiting Urbana Blue Knights on Sunday afternoon at Mueller Field, earning their second Mountain East Conference win in the process.

The Falcons (2-3, 2-1 Mountain East) dominated the match from start to finish, imposing their will over the Blue Knights early and and often. In the fifth minute, Leonardo Paiva sniped a goal from the left side of the box to the lower far post, giving the Falcons the early 1-0 lead.

Following Paiva's early goal, the Falcons didn't wait long to add yet another goal to their tally. Mats Jota scored in the 11th minute with an assist from Guilherme Gloria Albuquerque, extending NDC's lead to 2-0 early in the match.

NDC remained aggresive on offense, outshooting the Blue Knights by a 9-2 margin in the first half.

The offensive aggressiveness paid off once again for the Falcons as Paiva earned a penalty kick opportunity in the 24th minute following a foul from Urbana. Paiva converted the penalty kick, scoring his second goal of the game and giving NDC a comfortable 3-0 lead going into halftime.

Holding a 3-0 lead at the midway point of regulation, the Falcons didn't let up in the second half. Just six minutes into the half, Paiva completed the hat trick by scoring his third goal of the game while Albuquerque recorded his second assist of the day.

With the third goal from Paiva, the Falcons jumped out to a 4-0 lead and relied on steady defense throughout the remainder of the second half. The Blue Knights scored a late 88th-minute goal, but it didn't matter as NDC held on for the 4-1 victory over Urbana.

With the win, the Falcons improve to 2-3 on the season, including a 2-1 mark against Mountain East Conference competition.

NDC returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 21 on the road at Wheeling Jesuit University in another MEC showdown. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
