ERIE, Pa. – The Notre Dame Falcons played their final non-conference tilt of the season on Tuesday afternoon, and came out on the wrong end of a 14-1 decision against Mercyhurst.
For the Falcons (20-18) the loss was their ninth on the road this season, while the win for Mercyhurst (29-9) was their sixth in a row, and they've now won 16 of 17 at home.
Very little went well for the Falcons. They were limited to just five hits on the day, while the Lakers posted crooked numbers in five different innings, scoring 14 runs on 12 hits.
After the Lakers scored twice in the second and two more times in the third to take a 4-0 advantage, the Falcons got their lone run in the top of the fifth.
Hank Beasore started the inning with an infield single.
TJ Lett's sacrifice bunt moved him to second, before
Travis Smetana's groundout put Beasore on third, and he scored on a passed ball.
Things didn't get any better for the Falcons after that, as the Lakers scored twice in the sixth, five times in the bottom of the seventh and they added three in the home half of the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Beasore,
Danny Beaver,
Julio Rosales,
Nick Ely and
Troy Findlay all hit safely once for the Falcons.
Notre Dame used four different pitchers on the day, including
Chris Murphy (0-2) who started the game for the Falcons, and ended up with the loss after allowing four runs, only two earned on two hits over three innings of action.
The Falcons will return to action on Saturday, April 23, when they square off against Wheeling Jesuit in a Mountain East Conference double header in Wheeling, W.Va. The first pitch in game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
