NDC sets a program record in 35-14 win over Urbana on Senior Day

Box Score
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Notre Dame Falcons won for the eighth time this season, setting a new program record with a 35-14 victory over the Urbana Blue Knights at Mueller Field on Senior Day.

The victory for the Falcons (8-2, 7-2 MEC) was their eighth of the season, a new program record, while the loss for the Blue Knights (3-7, 2-7 MEC) was their third straight against the Falcons, and their third in their last four overall.

Before the game, the Falcons honored 16 seniors on Senior Day, most of which played a big role in the victory over the Blue Knights. Notre Dame was very balanced on offense, rushing for 205 yards, and throwing for 198. Defensively, the Falcons shut the Blue Knights down, holding them to just 17 yards rushing, and just 18.7-percent (3-for-16) on third downs.

The game began with a scoring drive from the Blue Knights. Urbana converted twice on fourth down on a 14-play, 72-yard drive, and quarterback Tajuan Green completed it, with a 1-yard touchdown rush on fourth and goal.

Notre Dame responded immediately, with a 10-play, 54-yard scoring drive, which concluded with Malik Grove's 22-yard touchdown pass to Mitchell Shegos to tie the game at 7-7 with 5:55 left in the first quarter.

After forcing Urbana to punt on their next possession, the Notre Dame offense fumbled on the first play of the ensuing possession at their own 42 yard line. However, the Falcon defense was able to put out the fire, as they forced the Blue Knights to turn the ball over on downs.

Notre Dame took the lead later in the half, as Grove ended a 12-play 75-yard drive on a 1-yard touchdown rush, putting the Falcons ahead, 14-7 with 6:50 left in the second quarter.

The Falcons took advantage of terrific field position to setup their next score. Nateshawn Hargrove partially deflected a punt, giving NDC the ball at the Urbana 41 yard line. Five plays into the drive, DJ Greene ran it in from seven yards out to give NDC a 21-7 lead, which they took into the half.

After forcing a 3-and-out on Urbana's first drive of the second half, Notre Dame put a quick 5-play drive together, and Grove threw his second touchdown pass of the day, an 18-yard scoring strike to BJ Baldwin to give NDC a 28-7 lead with 4:58 to play in the third quarter.

Urbana was able to get into the end zone one last time, as Marcus Graham threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to get the Blue Knights back within 14 (28-14) with 14:56 to play. The touchdown was the first surrendered by the NDC defense in the fourth quarter since the fourth week of the season.

The Falcons were able to put one final scoring drive together to put the game away. They took advantage of great field position again, taking over near midfield after forcing the Blue Knights to turn the ball over on downs. Grove found Shegos again, on a 19-yard scoring strike, their second of the day to give NDC a 35-14 advantage with just over six minutes remaining.

Greene led the NDC ground attack with 133 yards and a touchdown, while Grove ran for 54 yards and a score as well. Brian Walker tallied 27 yards on just five carries.

Through the air, Grove was very efficient, completing 21-of-24 passes for 198 yards, and a trio of scores, giving him at least one touchdown pass in each of his last 12 games.

Shegos was his top target, hauling in 10 passes for 108 yards and a pair of touchdowns, giving him 11 on the season, and he's caught at least one pass in each of his last 32 games. Baldwin hauled in three passes for 62 yards and a touchdown while C.J. Germany caught two balls for 10 yards and Emmanuel Smith caught four passes for 10 yards.

Onslow Williams led the NDC defense with seven tackles on the day, including five solo stops, and Jake Chestnut wasn't far behind with six. Vince Ellis had a pair of sacks on the day and forced a fumble as well. Andon Ware came away with an interception for the Falcons to go along with three tackles.

The Falcons will play their final game of the regular season next Saturday, Nov. 12, when they hit the road to take on West Virginia Wesleyan in Buckhannon, W.Va. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
