ATHENS, W.Va. -- The Notre Dame College men's soccer team tied the host Concord Mountain Lions, 1-1, in a double-overtime, Wednesday afternoon showdown between Mountain East Conference opponents.
Leonardo Paiva scored the lone goal for the Falcons, who trailed for the majority of the match. Concord scored a 32nd minute goal to put NDC behind, 1-0, but the Falcons proved resilient.
Despite outshooting Concord 4-3 in the first half, the Falcons trailed 1-0 at halftime. NDC held the advantage on first-half corner kicks, 4-2.
In the second half, the Notre Dame offense continued to search for the equalizing goal. On the other side of the pitch, the Falcons defense continued to stand tall, holding the Mountain Lions to just three shot attempts in the second half.
With just minutes remaining in the game, the Falcons finally found the goal they searched all game for.
Leonardo Paiva, the leading goal-scorer in all of NCAA Division II, came through with an 86th minute goal for the Falcons, scoring at the 85:51 mark with an assist from
Guilherme Gloria Albuquerque. The game-tying goal was Paiva's 24th of the season, while the assist was Albuquerque's fourth of the season.
The late goal from Paiva forced overtime, and the Falcons carried momentum with them into the extra period. NDC outshot Concord, 3-0, in the two additional OT frames, but the score remained knotted for a final tie score of 1-1.
The Falcons return to action on Saturday, Oct. 29 on the road at Salem International in a non-conference matchup. Game time is scheduled for 2 pm.
