Men's soccer ties Charleston, 1-1

Falcons, Golden Eagles battle to 2OT tie

Box Score
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Notre Dame College men's soccer team took to the road on Thursday to face the host Charleston Golden Eagles in a showdown between familiar Mountain East Conference foes. After 110 minutes of hard-fought action between both sides, NDC and UC tied at 1-1, the first such result for both sides this season.

The Falcons (8-4-1 overall, 7-2-1, MEC) and Golden Eagles squared off for a rematch from NDC's 5-3 win over UC back on Sept. 25. After the high-scoring affair in the first meeting, the second match was quite the opposite.

The first half remained scoreless between both sides, and it wasn't until the second half that the offense arrived for both sides.

Striking first on the scoreboard was Charleston's Will Roberts, who scored his 18th goal of the season (T-3rd NCAA) in the 54th minute, leaving the Falcons trailing 1-0.

The Falcons responded by continuing to search for offensive chances, waiting for the equalizing goal. NDC looked to Leonardo Paiva, the leading goal-scorer in all of NCAA Division II, and the junior came through in the clutch once again.

In the 73rd minute, Paiva scored his NCAA D2-leading 22nd goal to tie the score at 1-1, giving the Falcons new life. Furthermore, the goal kept Paiva's scoring streak intact as he has now scored at least one goal in all 13 of the Falcons' games this season.

NDC's defense, led by three saves from goalkeeper Daniele De Angelis, kept the score knotted at 1-1 for the remainder of regulation, forcing overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime period, both sides followed with another scoreless frame in the second and final overtime period, leading to a 1-1 tie between the MEC rivals.

With the tie, the Falcons now stand at 8-4-1 overall, including a 7-2-1 mark against MEC play.

NDC returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 23 at home against the visiting Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals. Game time is scheduled for 1 pm at Mueller Field.
