SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame College men's soccer team hosted the visiting West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats in a Mountain East Conference battle on Sunday afternoon at Mueller Field. The Falcons used a second-half goal from
Leonardo Paiva to pick up a 1-0 home win over the visiting Bobcats.
Daniele De Angelis recorded four saves in the game for the Falcons, pitching the shutout for NDC en route to the 1-0 road win.Â
The battle between familiar foes began at a quiet pace, with both sides feeling each other out in the early minutes of regulation. Neither the Falcons nor Bobcats were able to score in the first half, leading a scoreless stalemate of 0-0 at halftime.
In the second half, the Falcons relied on 2015 CCA All-American and leading scorer
Leonardo Paiva.
Paiva, the leading goal-scorer in all of NCAA Division II, added yet another goal to his season tally with a header goal in the 58th minute, giving NDC a 1-0 lead over WVWC. The goal came off an assist from
Arthur Favero, who shot a cross into the box to create the scoring opportunity for Paiva. The goal was Paiva's 21st of the season.
Following the header goal from Paiva, the Falcons turned their attention to defense in efforts to keep the Bobcats off the scoreboard. NDC's defensive front was able to do just that, holding WVWC scoreless in the game en route to a 1-0 win.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 9-4 overall, including an 8-2 mark against MEC opponents.
The Falcons return to action on Thursday, Oct. 20 on the road against the Charleston Golden Eagles in another MEC showdown. Game time is scheduled for 7 pm in Charleston, West Virginia.
