Box Score SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The 11th-ranked Notre Dame College men's soccer team continued its strong 2015 campaign against the visiting West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats on Friday afternoon, winning 4-2. The Falcons jumped out to a 4-0 lead over the Mountain East Conference rival Bobcats and held on to win 4-2, improving to 4-0 in the process.
The first half between the Falcons and Bobcats belonged to NDC's
Arthur Favero, who scored the opening goal in the 25th minute to give NDC the early 1-0 lead.
Just a few minutes later in the 34th minute, Favero scored again for the Falcons. Following a shot deflection, the Sao Paulo, Brazil native found an opening between two defenders and sniped the back of the net, pushing the Falcons' lead to 2-0.
The Falcons went into halftime with a 2-0 lead under their belt, while also outshooting the Bobcats by a 13-6 margin in the first half.
Coming out of the gate in the second half, the Falcons' offensive dominance continued early and often.
Leonardo Paiva, the Falcons' leading scored through the first three games of the season, added to his scoring total early in the second half. Paiva struck the back of the net once again - his fourth goal of the season - to extend NDC's lead to 3-0 at the 48:30 mark in the game.
Just over 60 seconds later, NDC's offense refused to be denied yet again.
Julian Gianotti dished an impressive cross to
Jacob Earnest, who took advantage of the accurate pass and scored a header goal into the corner of the net to give the Falcons a 4-0 lead in the 50th minute.
From there, the Falcons continued to dominate ball possession and apply consistent pressure to the Bobcats' defense. NDC outshot WVW 13-4 in the second half.
The Bobcats' Jordan Halpern was able to score two late goals in the contest, both via penalty kick, to cut the Falcons' lead to 4-2, but by then it was too-little, too-late. NDC held on for the 4-2 victory, cementing their second consecutive home win of the season.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 4-0 on the season, including 2-0 in MEC play. Furthermore, the Falcons have outscored opponents by a margin of 14-4 through four games this season.
NDC will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 13 on the road against Lock Haven in a non-conference matchup. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
